Insainly long undocumented processes are how many employees make themselves layoff proof.
They have silo'ed the knowledge so it's impossible for anyone else to step into their role. I've been forced during layoffs to release younger better worker, with more potential, simply because the older worker managed to make themselves single point failures.

And it's not an easy problem to fix unless you are willing to make a lot of enemies and risk getting laid off yourself.

Streamlining at HW = headcount reduction = biggest cost lever in the absence of understanding how your factories function or even care to understand what they do. I came to the realization after more than 13 years that HW leadership for the most part do not even know what a good majority of their sites actually do. They decide to close sites because they can not be bothered to understand how to improve processes and in the end employees lose. Leaders become champions Short term because they save millions and then they are either promoted and kicked to the curb with a boat load of cash and then a new team comes in to try to clean up.....vicious cycle that will not change the outcomes.

You misunderstand the purpose of the different departments.

The goal of the purchasing department is to maximize the amout of liquid cash on hand.
They do this by delaying payment for goods recieved and making it difficult to order more. Bonus all around as our cash number are fabulous.

The goal of HR is to optimize census and minimize cost per hour worked. Reference that HR person who lowballed the diversity candidate salary offer. By indirectly sponsoring sites like thelayoff HR is ensuring only desparate people apply. Wage targets met!

IT .. these are the golden wonders ...i cant tell what their goal is.. seems to involve a complex game where points are earned for each unique job title with more value assigned for execs and negative points for individual contributors who actually do work .
So far corporate in charlotte is crushing IT with a net negative number of indivual contributors.

Engineering has the sole goal of maximizing complaints. Engineers love to whine. Process to them is only about the squeaky joy of telling someone else they are just wrong. Engineers complain the most about processes... thats how you can tell they are working.
Technicians fall into this pattern too as their skills catch up with the engineers they work alongside. Before too long the complaints come in a well coordinated chorus.

So @OP... what is your job?

Nope. More process. More cliché. More tools that do not work, not intuitive, and crashes.
And do not forget to churn the tools with different ones that work no better.
The process and tool org, plus pmos, need the job security, while the rest of us get RDE holidays....
