Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

Facts

FACTS:

  1. I have almost 400 claim files.
  2. I have 40+ Litigation files.
  3. The attorneys I work with have paralegals amswering their phone calls, responding to their emails, setting up conference calls, checking for schedule conflicts - I do all.of this myself.
  4. In between handling litigation files that could potentially cost SF miiions in excess verdict judgements A1 - FL), I am required to take phone calls so we will be in SLO, and spend 25 minutes talking to claimants/insureds telling me that no one ever calls them back or anwers their questions
  5. The "system" has been "updated", so that if I try to take a day, or two off, anyone needing assistance cannot be tranferred. I cannot get time off to recharge so that I won't be burned out-so I won't quit, or go out on disablity. Wish I had access to disability numbers, they have to be huge.
  6. Our CLC attorneys recommend settlement on 94.4% of the Litigation files I have handled (A1 - FL). I have been keeping recording the numbers.
  7. I don't take "15 minute breaks", and I don't care about that. I take 20 minute lunches, and I don't care about that.
  8. I find my job to be intetesting and challenging, but not fairly compensated or supported. Because it isn't.

I worked in the field in the ninety's and we always had over 200 paper files to handle everything. Retired since 2014 and MUCH happier.

@5ufm+1fTFARMP, do you work in A1 Injury? I did not exaggerate the number of claim files assigned to me.

While 400 is likely an exaggeration, having 200-250 claims is pretty much the norm. When you have that many claims your life is basically managing ticked off customers that you cant follow up with in a timely manner due to all the data entry work you're doing from attorney demands and litigation. You end up getting stressed, missing deadlines, getting extra suits and problems.

State Farm zooms in on an operating cost metric while missing the entire picture and how much extra money they are spending on suits and settlements by saving on that operating cost metric. No way is their cost reductions worth it, bad faith suits, higher settlement costs, cost of employee turnover, ect.

Maybe it all wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt a confrontational relationship with their claims handlers.

Either way, most RA1/RA2 people want to be good handlers and take care of our customers, however we really just are not given the tools or time to do this, and none of our metrics that matter are focused on this, and if it were focused on the customer with metrics, would only be a reflection of the poor customer service environment fostered by the company.

The costs the company pays to their defense attornies are tax deductible……they dont care how many files a BI rep has or the exposure they have…..trust me..I was a manager out of Atlanta over a BI team for 20 years…the company changed their position when the first major reorg occurred years ago……the bad faith suits are out of control…they dont care…..l

The company may not care how many claims I have , but the customer paying for protection certainly does. They pay for a service, but you have never handled a claim or answered a phone.

I worked 32 years as a BI specialist handling the files you now hate to handle. When SF did the 4 hub program and ran off the experienced claims reps it created a disaster. I retired and left. Inventories now are not manageable and havent been for 13 years. Trust me…they dont care…litigation is thru the roof..out of control…..run away train….the farm would rather pay their defense attornies and the verdicts that are rendered than try to manage these claims up front….

The point is, I guess, why have a BI team if they cant focus on the BI? I spend next to no time negotiating and trying to talk down large numbers, and only have time for the massive amount of data entry to get authority so I can just get to my max authority and settle. Everyone is like this, with a very few actually fighting hard against excessive settlements, and those people are so behind and slammed always.

But i guess operating costs are down, and thats the only metric they watch, so who cares how many millions leave in excessive settlements right?

Also, no one should have more than 100-150 claims ever.

The company could care less how many BI files you have or those involved in litigation.

INJ CA here … C1, C2, C3, E1, E3 … used to get 12-16hrs per week for tasks. Now we get 3 if we’re lucky. Careful pointing fingers.

Solid post OP.

You missed a LOT but the picture you paint is spot on.

Injury T2/3 is a dumping ground for all claims issues, on top of the very costly and important core job of settling BI claims and dealing with litigation.

Just the double and triple work alone to get these two functions complete should be in text books as examples of what not to do.

It feels like the department gets no help from anyone, our associates take unacceptably long to work tasks, other departments wont do their work before escalating ect.

Basically your entire T2 BI team isnt trying to wheel and deal with attorneys, they are just going through the motions until we are at max auth because we dont have time to fight for state farm. I have yet to meet an adjuster without the mentality of "whatever get it settled so you can clear it out your queue" rather than fighting against inflated demands and excessive treatment.

Also this post took about 45 seconds to make, which is more time that i took for breaks today, because i dont have time, in case any posters were curious how quickly a paragraph can be typed.

Injury CS here from E3, we are in the mid 300s here. We are either end of career handlers or new off the street. The amount of brain drain is incredible. Thank god your demand pool is a licensing state so I don’t get pulled into that mess. I’m curious what your turnover is there, are people leaving with the bonus paid ?

@kzk+1fTFARMP. lol, this tactic was used by a CS on many occasions, who then worked while on PTO so their metrics looked great. They were promptly promoted to TM.
