I’m not saying there won’t be layoffs at all. There are always layoffs at AT&T. There will always be layoffs at AT&T. But not the kind we came to expect before the pandemic. Not the “move to Dallas, Atlanta, El Segundo” kind of layoffs. Not the craft or call center kind of layoffs. There is a job for everyone who wants to work. After the fiber build, all bets are off. Expect the old cuts and relocation scams. But for 2022 and 2023, expect a lot of rumors without substance.

The fiber build out impacts very few employees. They will do it better and cheaper by contracting most of it out anyway
Hip, subs do indeed place the fiber in buried applications. Craft union techs splice it up & maintain it.
ATT- they need cheap labor, cheap components and massive scale to do business. It’s the only survival business plan left. They have made too many poor choices and now it’s time to suffer those consequences.
Until debt is reduced, share price increases and executives start getting the gold glove treatment again, this will be normal business.
A lot of AT&T IT is already outsourced to India. I think you're mixing Consumer services with IT. I believe the fiber is part of the Consumer Services realm and does not fall under IT. And yes, I do believe a lot of the work that is currently done by T technicians will eventually be given to contractors once this deal with the union expires. There are way too many technicians and not enough work for T to justify their existence and keeping them on the payroll. Who knows what T has in store down the road! They might need more techs at some point in time at least that's the plan!
All the AT&T fiber in my town was laid by subcontractors, not company employees. It's been that way for years.

IT is updating the systems that support fiber and verifying they can support the increased numbers. Once that is done - will IT get out sourced?
With this new economy, I don’t believe T can afford to outsource the fiber build as well as pay its own technicians. Something has to give, either the contractors do the work or T employees, but it can’t afford both! Operating expenses just increased by 20% and that’s no small factor, that’s significant enough for T to take drastic measures!
2022 will be 2021 all over again (is my call). I think the biggest driver of layoffs will be in reducing their real estate footprint, and people will be able to follow the work. So, if leases are expiring, or they can dump off some real estate, they'll take advantage of that.
AT&T can outsource those jobs at anytime. Byers to name just one of the many companies that are doing the OSP engineering currently for AT&T. Yes, AT&T has it's own group that does the same work in OSP Mgmt Design. MasTec again to name one of many construction companies can do the installation part. I know several people from different organization that were well skilled and they had their jobs outsourced to less competent companies. So don't get too comfortable... cause we all know AT&T can and will do anything to try and save money even if don't succeed.
