Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Coworker claims he was fired as soon as he gave his notice

I don't think this is an issue since he was leaving anyhow, but I do wonder if things like this happen all the time? I'd think you'd want people to stay and make sure they wrap up everything they were working on before sending them on their way. If this is the norm, why even give a two weeks notice? Why not just leave?

I have seen where a person in sales is going to State Farm and they are done that day, not fired they just don't come in for 2 weeks and turn their computer in.

I have also seen where a person not in sales such as marketing or HR goes to a competitor and they give notice and keep working for the next 2 weeks.

I'm in Legal/Staff Counsel, and have seen this happen if the employee is leaving to work for a competitor and/or if they have a bad attitude.

And you can't be "fired" after you've given notice. Once you give notice, you've made a decision to leave and the company can escalate the timing of your departure if they chose to. Getting fired is your employer deciding that you no longer work for them. It's an important distinction to make.

  1. You are not fired if you quit. You decided to leave and they decided to not have you work anymore. That is not being fired. Stop with your fox news headlines
  2. It's been discussed many times here but allstate does not retain you for the two weeks if you are going to a competitor or have an role that could effect the business
  3. Not having all employees work out 2 weeks is very common in corporate anerica

Yep. My coworker, an adjuster. Got walked after putting in their 2 weeks. No pay. Completely un professional. 2 weeks notice is a professional courtesy. Allstate should reciprocate that with 2 weeks pay if they decide to walk someone. Not sure why anyone would put in their notice vs quitting at this point. Morale is totally in the tank.

It depends. If you're in sales, security, or simply in a team where there's no real handoff needed, it's not uncommon to be walked in any industry. Especially if you are also prone to toxic remarks or considered a malcontent, in general.
