Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Don't be too excited about the job market

Yes, there is currently a need for lower level workers all around, but if you're mid-level or above, you're out of luck. The job market is still tight for us. Most of the open positions at our level still receive hundreds of applications each (I've got this from two sources.) That's not an employee's market, that's business as usual.

If you want to fix filling tech jobs, good rid of these useless recruiters and recruiting companies. They are really bad at getting good candidates in front of the hiring managers. They are more interested in keyword resumes than someone who can do the work.

The only thing that's been posted here is the same resume-building advice that everyone parrots everywhere else. Try spewing something useful yourself.

How about you providing some valuable advises to the OP instead of being bashful to others?

One BS success story on here is supposed to outweigh many negative in-person stories.

Classic.

Incredible how the helpful posts are getting so many immediate hate votes. Me? Systems/storage/cloud engineer. Over 50. Freakin old dude, boomer, whatever you want to call me. I was terrified when I got laid off last year. But even starting from ground zero, I found a better job than the one I had in about 90 days. If you have relevant skills and have an attitude that makes you worth hiring, you'll find a new job if you want one. Period. It is absolutely an employee's market.

I don’t understand the hate for some of the replies. It wasn’t so much condescending but more straight to the points to help OP.

I left WF awhile back but it took me 9 months to land in a good, comparable situation (job description, pay, WFH). If there’s a job you see that look interesting, you can bet that there are multiple candidates who are also interested. so in order to get your foot in the door for the interviewing process you got to show something on your resume that you are keeping your skillset current. whether that means an online certification program or even just a class, it can only help. And it shows the prospective employer that you like to learn and is curious.

If you have relevant skillsets, it doesn’t matter as much your age, especially on a mid level job position. For those that are truly thinking about leaving WF, these are the things you have to consider and prep for as you job search

Mid-level what? At least say your role so people have some idea of what you are talking about and call you on fact/cap appropriately. WF employs custodians, museum caretakers, analysts, every walk of tech, tellers, traders, and hundreds of other jobs. So mid-level what?

Indian recruiters are the worst. They low ball everyone on pay. They are like thieves.

You must be one of those dinosaurs at WF who never developed additional skills or the desire to learn other things.
WF is full of people like you.

As a VP, I get lots of cold calls asking if I’m interested in new opportunities.

Sorry to hear that. I'm guessing you are not in IT. Either that, or you haven't kept up with current skills, or you really need to work on your resume and linkedin skills. I'm still getting calls and emails every week, even after stopping my search last January.

Do not rely on blind applications because those go wrong in so many ways. You have to craft your resume and your answers to make it past the automations. Your best bet is to have a great linkedin profile, and register at every major jobsite with an accurate, well-crafted resume. It goes much better when recruiters are contacting you directly because you came up as a good fit for a role.

I disagree. It all depends on what you can do.
It is completely your fault if you can’t get a job in today’s market, regardless of level.
