I try, but fail to improve my performance. There is simply too much work and I'm just consistently failing at it. This worries me because I would really like to improve my performance and keep this job for a while. Is there anyone who has had poor performance and managed to improve it significantly somehow?

I don’t know but stank continues to underperform and always comes out smelling like a rose.
Hey slacker, more working, less bellyaching.
Sounds like you need a DML.....LOL

Yep. Troll post.
Ah the PIP. I survived one but had a friend get me into a other department.
Leave you deserve a company that isn't a cesspool - you won't regret it.
You'll be promoted to Director soon, keep up the good work.
Just do your job and don’t worry. Managers sre the ones required to worry about nothing
When the company adopted Six Sigma/Lean I said, tell me the rules and I'll play the game. When the company paid a stupid amount of money to do time and motion studies to adopt MSOC, I said tell me the rules, but they would not. I had to find out the rules though trail and error. I did. I've heard something about "customers" those that AT&T hates only a little less than employees, but I don't worry about customers, only my numbers. My numbers are good every payday.
I was on a PIP. Found that by reducing my monthly load by 40% and using time codes that are available, I was able to move from the bottom of a 120 person group to number 2 for a sustained 6 months. Actually got bored with the amount of free time I had during the day, but I looked like a hero. “Strive to be mediocre” and you can allow the spotlight to slid over to someone else.
IF you are able to meet your metrics, management will raise the bar. Then if you are somehow able to meet those metrics, they will raise the bar again. And again and again until they other ki-l you with stress or decide they don't need you any more and get rid of you.
The only solution to this madness is to find better employment elsewhere. This is a job seekers market now. If you have marketable skills there is absolutely no reason to work for a company like AT&T.
