I just received a pamphlet announcing a smoking surcharge of 75.00 a month. I wanted to make sure I have it listed that I don’t smoke as I was going back and forth through all the benefits stuff. They said to go into Castlight but I don’t see where to say I’m a non smoker to make sure I avoid the surcharge.

Every time I come to this site I'm reminded of how much the American education system has failed us.
Smoking is not a choice for everyone. A lot of smokers were born with addictive personality. After they pick up a smoking habit their body becomes physically dependent on the nicotine and their addictive personality forces them to be dependent on the routine of smoking.
Thinking it s a choice is like thinking you can pray the g-y away. It's not something that every smoker decides to do. Would you support a similar surcharge for people who use caffeine daily, or people who walk less than 10,000 steps daily?
This has been around for years. Check the Benefits web site to see if you can make it truthful. This is the companies method of risk mitigation for smokers. They really don't want to pay for lung cancer, or long lasting emphysema.
Strong disagree that they should pay a surcharge. What's next, making trans people pay surcharge? What about people with depression? What of they were born with a health issue?
The difference is smoking is a choice not a necessity. I think they all should charge extra for smokers. You're going to get smoking related disease anyways.
I'm sure you need to contact the AT&T benefits center and not your insurance carrier. The question regarding the surcharge is on the annual medical selection form.
I hope they fire the people that lie on that too.
go ahead and lie on the insurance form, it's only federal crime known as insurance fraud. Finger crossed you don't get sick as a result of smoking, insurance will drop you in a heartbeat. Just be honest on all insurance inquires, is the best approach here people.
Fill out the form, put down non smoking. Wait on the phone with everyone else to update with customer service or send in form and hope.

There should be one price for all. Don't like it? Then support Medicare for All and get us single payer medical. That will take a load off the company books and help us avoid layoff!
Are charges being added for non-vaccinated? This is a needed addition.
I was on the verge of quitting anyway. This sealed the deal, for me. But yes. What about the 300 pound cheeseburger eating and nightly 12 pack drinking repair tech? It's a bit of a slippery slope.
Agree with PP, anyone that has a health condition or lifestyle that could require extra medical care, they MUST pay the surcharge. It's 2022 people open your eyes and take care of yourself or pay.
You may have to call the benefits center, but good luck with that. You can’t get an English speaking representative, and they have no clue what they’re talking about. And typically you get hung up on because their phone connection in India or Honduras doesn’t work. You could try the number on the back of your card although I think they may direct you to the BC anyway.
