If everyone spoke their mind would Chevron be a better company?

People rarely speak their mind here at Chevron... If everyone spoke their mind would Chevron be a better company?

Our executives beat their chest and cry from the mountain top about creating a “feedback rich” culture…..where folks can constructively and with positive intent speak their mind. They get on Townhalls and workplace and talk about how they are working on becoming better leaders…….a lot of billboard talk………Take a look at the top deck executives and how many of them really want honest and candid feedback about their performance and leadership…….much lesss the change that is really needed. It all begins with them…….speak your mind and MN from D.S., JJ from U.S., JG (will he just retire already “Joe’s way or the highway”) will put you in your place. Speak you mind and you are done…..they don’t “forgive” ……ever…. when it really isn’t about forgiveness its about them realizing they may have been wrong in the beginning…….and that their is 2 sides to every coin……they just seem to always land on their side of the coin. The best thing a leader can do is to surround themself with those who will be honest, ask questions and point out the issues/opportunities…….however, in this company leadership is all about surrounding themselves with “yes” men…..and the emperor has no cloths…….it all starts at the top!

Yes, they could vent and feel better, then get on with something productive, like working for their generous package…

MW's fantasy is to have all of Chevron (well, maybe not SR) run by computers. Hence why he pushes the 'digital transformation' so hard. Computers don't complain, computers just do what they're told.

'Speaking your mind', especially in a public setting, is a sure-fire way to get laid off the next go-round. At the very least, this will put your career into a stall. As some have noted, you 'need to be tactful' in your comments, but that's a euphemism for 'say less than you think'. You'll notice that high-pots never, never 'speak their minds', not even in private, but instead accept (or more so, promote) whatever the company line is. Your Chevron longevity is directly tied to keeping your thoughts to yourself. You can call it a corporate lobotomy or brainwashing, take your pick. MW wants you to be like Bob Cratchit and don't complain, just make profit.

Executive management only listens to themselves. Nothing ever comes from the surveys and townhall but empty promises and political talk. They continue to make things worse for employees.

I talked to my manager and spoke my mind and we ended up going off campus for some man time.

So speaking your mind can work.

The last time people spoke up there were layoffs. The best part was management went to say we heard you and this is what you wanted.
Who wants to speak up after that

Randall Mindy: "Not everything needs to sound so godda-n clever or charming or likable all the time. Sometimes we need to just be able to say things to one another. We need to hear things.

I always speak my mind. I did so for 28 years at Chevron and I do so everywhere else. The thing to realize is that one must speak with tact, respect and certainty of what you say. Spouting off the cuff opinions and remarks in a business setting is something that’s not productive and tends to cast you in a bad light.

I’m a newish external hire and it’s been my policy since the beginning to be honest and it has worked out well for me. I’ve noticed long term chevron employees are afraid to speak up and thus stuff gets pushed aside. Seems since our team has hired more externally or even from other groups we’ve collectively spoken up and stuff has been getting done. Subject to your group and manager of course.

So I think the answer is yes.

People who speak their mind are encouraged to retire or are let go during layoffs. The way to survive is to keep your head down to support your family.

They don’t want to hear the truth. They can’t handle the truth.

If upper management would listen to even a fraction thats been brought up during town halls and on surveys it could be a better place. Instead they just blame the pandemic for the current state. Listen to people on work from home and other items. Instead only the shareholders have managements ear.
