I left Anthem because my new job offered me double the salary I was making at Anthem. The only way you will ever make six figures is to leave and work for a smaller company. A smaller company typically pays a lot more. The only way you will make six figures at Anthem is if you work in IT and become a a manager or above. I make what a director makes at Anthem. Though, I am in the information technology field if that says anything.

Taking a SF salary (usually 20-30% higher) will disappear soon. Unless you are in a high demand specialty field.
You need to also factor in the benefits and 401k matching and pension. Also in larger companies, you work less overtime. Smaller companies tend to fail and lay off employees more frequently. HR there is smaller and has less power so management is much more toxic. But I am making more in a larger company than when I was at a smaller company working less hours too. At a smaller company, I was wearing 5+ hats while I am only wearing 3 in the big company.
I disagree that smaller companies pay more. It's more the exception than the rule. Just depends on discipline and area you live in. With that said, if you make it into a big tech company in SF and make a huge salary, you can easily take that huge salary with you to a much cheaper Midwestern state and live greatly off the inflation sized salary.
