Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

No time for side gigs

If this is true, I'm not sure what to think about it:

69% of full-time remote employees say they have a second job, new survey shows. It’s another reason for CEOs to be paranoid about WFH. Second jobs are widespread, a survey suggests. - @2cml+1e1RGR4G

Does this mean that most employees have enough time for side gigs as well, while others are so overwhelmed that it is not bearable?

Must be quite a wife if you have got her bringing that kind of money. Don't abuse her!

@5dus, If you had a job with CVX for 27 years and also a $125k net side gig for some time and you aren't already enjoying a "secure retirement" you're doing something wrong.

Follow thsi advice when dealing witg Supervisors and MAnagers at Chevron, YOu wil do very well if you do:

Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge : Look, Mr. Scott, I'd love to explain everything to you, but the Captain wants this spectrographic analysis done by 1300 hours.

[La Forge goes back to work; Scotty follows slowly]

Scotty : Do you mind a little advice? Starfleet captains are like children. They want everything right now and they want it their way. But the secret is to give them only what they need, not what they want.

Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge : Yeah, well, I told the Captain I'd have this analysis done in an hour.

Scotty : How long will it really take?

Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge : An hour!

Scotty : Oh, you didn't tell him how long it would really take, did ya?

Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge : Well, of course I did.

Scotty : Oh, laddie. You've got a lot to learn if you want people to think of you as a miracle worker.

I’ve been with Chevron going on 27 years now. I’ve held an office staff position all my career. I also have managed a successful side business which I and my wife both dedicate our time to. It has not interfered with our time or performance in our main jobs. Because of this our employers don’t know of our side business nor need to know of it. I won’t disclose the kind of business it is, as it’s a venture that has been perfected by us over the many years. We derive a handsome third income stream from our business which after taxes amounts to around $125,000 annually. Not a kings random but nonetheless something we enjoy doing and has been contributing to our eventual secure retirement.

Can confirm I’m in ops and no way can I have a side gig. I’m mentally tired by the end of the day and my busy-ness is very hard to predict. I wish I could have a side gig being a virtual assistant but I’d burn out.

Side hustles and gigs abound both while on campus (virtually) and when off the clock both. Just be imaginative and seek it out online. I was hesitant at first, and admit ably I do not break the bank with my side hustles, but, I do bring in an extra 20-30% each month. In the past I would not have undertaken side hustles, but, I saw what happened to coworkers who were caught out unaware, it will not be happening to me.

The only people 'overwhelmed' in Chevron are maybe some ops people. Most functions (Finance, HR, Procurement, almost all Petrotechs, most managers) can quite readily slip in a side gig. Even in the good ol' days (in the office), few people worked more than 4-6 hours per day, spending the rest of the time figuring out where to go to lunch, or comparing their kids, cars, or houses at the cafe. Without those 'distractions', a second job is might push you to 8-9 hours a day on some days. Myself, I can get both jobs done in 6 hours each day. I get out of long-winded meetings by saying I have a doctor's appt., my kid has a doctor's appt., etc. etc.

An important point to holding two or more lucrative jobs at the same time is to not over-work yourself. Shoot for mediocre performance or less, just enough to keep your job. That way you can sort of glide at both jobs and not overdo it. Here is the trick, however - make sure your supervisor and all your co-workers think you are completely snowed under with tasks such that they would not even dream of asking you to do more. Make everything sound Herculean. It's not that hard - just subtly point out how many nights you worked until 8 last week, cr a p like that. The only tricky part is juggling meeting schedules and dealing with the inevitable simultaneous meetings on two different laptops.

What about the side gigs at the off campus site? I've been hearing a lot about that around the office.
