Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Feeling stuck

I've been here just long enough to be too old to find a new job (according to other employers, not me) and too young to retire. Other than starting my own business, which is too risky to do since my savings are not that high, I'm stuck here, hoping that I'll be able to survive layoffs until early retirement. Let me tell you, being out of options at my age sucks.

Been there and done that. I know how that feels. I ultimately quit and worked as an engineering contractor for a few years to take me to Medicare age.

Think out of the box. I started a business in April and by mid next year I'll be making as much as I did at Honeywell and of course will try to make more than that. I'm still at Honeywell but it looks like my last day will be Dec 8th. Start a business and then all your hard work and earnings will be for you only

Time to reinvent yourself. I am 66. Took early retirement at 60 from a different industry known for its ups and downs. Knew the future there was bleak so I got some certifications for the direction I wanted to move in.

Rewrote my resume around my skills and accomplishments in the "new" area (which I'd actually been building on for years in my job) and got hired by HW at 63. Got cut in the 2020 Covid RIF. Got another certification and got hired at 30% higher pay, far better benefits, 100% WFH, and a collegial, supportive culture.

If I can do it, you can do it. I've posted the formula here several times. The key, as someone else has already mentioned, is to NOT try to get essentially the same job elsewhere. Take stock of your other skills and contributions that are currently in demand and are outside the box you mentally sit in.

Do you write good, clear instructions? Teach, mentor, or train others well? Quickly master any software thrown at you? Fluent in another language? Spot trends and gotchas in data readouts? Build solid relationships with clients?

No matter what you've been doing all these years, there are many directions you can move toward if you give yourself permission to do so. Pick one or two, join online professional groups for them, study up to gain confidence that you are conversant, and GO!

You underestimate yourself.
Employers only care if the can get 5-10 years out of you because most move on at any age after that time.

What holds most back from good job offers is either not being willing to relocate, or trying to get the exact same job as you have now with the competition. Expand you horizons. Look for a job at the company you want to get in the door.

My strategy at 50 is to build my side hustles while slowly backing away from honeywell. Step 1 was to start a strict 40hr work limit. I turn off at 3:30 every day no exceptions. That gave me 4 full hours a day to work on my remodeling business and generate income where I was working for free. I added 60k$/yr working part time at something I enjoy.

Next step will be to demote myself at honeywell by taking a lower job ( I'm top of band 4 today). My salary that applies to pension is already frozen... I could push a broom and not much changes long term. Same deal military guys do when they drop into reserves.

Much better numbers to put growth energy in a new business that breaks my wage slave existence.. I am grateful to honeywell but honestly...I don't work for them...I work for my family. No I am not sharing this with my boss until the day I quit. Honeywell gave up courtesy of two week notice when they furloughed and riffedwith no notice.

Before applying to any new jobs/postings, re-evaluate your resume, there are free services for this, also review your mannerisms of interviewing, there are great videos on YouTube for this, it is all about how you present yourself and have answers to potential behavior questions or scenarios, remember you only need to score one job offer

Keep trying, but with the supply chain & economy collapsing, along with injection mandates coming, you would be better off preparing your family for another great depression and civil-un.rest.

Forget what others say and do what you need to do.
Applying for other jobs might lead to a low chance of getting it but if you don't apply you have 0 chance.
5% chance or 0%. I'd go with the 5 every single time.

And in reality, it's much higher than 5%. That's just an example.

Here is what I did to land to a great job with much higher salary and lower stress. Put together a career strategy, list your experiences and transferable skills, list what you do and don’t have (some reputed online courses/certificates could be helpful) work on you LinkedIn profile and resume and network heavily, while applying for jobs actively. If you get interview calls then you know that you are going in the right direction. Otherwise, take a step back and tweak the process. All the best!

I know exactly what you mean. You need to change your retirement strategy is all. You don't need to depend on HON nor should you for your retirement. Take control of your destiny.
And as others said, apply for job, it might surprise you.

Do keep looking for jobs. The job market now is very fluid and changing monthly.

Great attitude. Be sure to pass it on to your children. Pathetic.
