Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

LEAVE NOW??

I am currently in internal audit for Chevron and just from reading these posts.. should I plan to get out ASAP? I am only 1 year into this job and am already scared about being laid off.. (from what people have communicated on here)

My work and everything is fine, but I just don't want to randomly be let go from a job that I started a year ago. Should I just plan the move already ASAP, not trying to be without a job.

Compared with the Software industry O&G is really stable. In software industry you do not typically get any severance and can be let go at any time with 2 weeks notice if you are lucky. Normally they just drag you out the office and throw you to the curb with 2 weeks back pay.

Reality - you won’t see it coming, and you won’t get facts about upcoming layoffs here. Best advise, be relevant, have no debt, improve your qualifications, then just keep on doing what you are doing.

Just wait for the package announcement, then decide.

I am in the finance sector of Chevron, and I can tell you that the chance of being laid off in the finance sector is lower compared to other departments. I have been here for 12 years and have not been worried about any layoffs. If you can perform your job well in this sector, you should have no fear of being laid off.

Especially for audit you shouldn't be fearing layoffs, many of our audit work cannot be outsourced to a different country due to U.S audit regulations and compliance laws. That being said, you should have good job security for the next 5-10 years.

They start layoffs from people in the FLDP program instead of laying off their actual finance and accounting FT people.

MW is a layoff-aholic. He gets some kind of high laying people off and needs to go to rehab. They are often to boost the dividend. The company morale is low and its becoming very difficult to work for.

@ymb

Only in scope for one layoff. Not sure how that’s the case unless you check a lot of boxes. There is literally no one that I know who has only been in scope once in my 15 yrs here. If a matter of fact I have been in over 5 layoffs or re orgs and that’s just the ones I can think of.

This place is toxic.

Working at Chevron now is basically a roller coaster. If you don’t like roller coasters then get off and find a train.

Yes we have a big layoff every 3-5 years, but I’ve been here nearly 15 years and only been in scope for one layoff and got through just fine.

Early career are usually fine too as their PSG is low.

@OP Most people are always looking for their next job. That’s just the nature of O&G.

If you don’t want to job-hop every 1-3 years, leave O&G and try something else. Companies have been known to layoff employees as early as two months after being hired. Nobody’s job is ever safe. Pay is leveling off, teams are understaffed, management is bloated, the regulatory climate is fickle, lawsuits are piling up, and your livelihood is tied to commodities prices.

If you choose to stay in O&G don’t say that you weren’t warned.

About every 4 years there is a reorg. I've been through 4 of them. Unless you are a cr-p worker, you'll be fine. Sometimes they will sweeten the p-t to entice you to leave. Like last year they were offering 3 weeks of pay for every year you have been with the company, plus company paid insurance for a year. Depending on your situation, it might be worth it.

Are you being dead serious? I hope this isn’t true.. I’m only 1 year in and feeling this kind of way isn’t helping. I’m a broke post graduate college student in debt smh

Doesn’t the accounting and finance department have a higher chance of layoffs? Due to work being outsourced to a different country?

If so, if I was you I would start looking for a new gig asap, because it’s hard to move out of accounting in oil and gas to normal accounting.

If the current administration continues its dismantling of the oil industry, yes, you should be worrying. Remember that when you go to vote in 2022 and 2024.

You're fine for a while, us the time to get all the experience and exposure you can. No, you will not be working for Chevron your entire career. You really don't want to.

You have to try really hard to get laid off with this market environment, and extra hard if you work for chevron.
