Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Is a job here worth this much stress?

I used to think that it is no less stressful in any other company, but I've changed my mind. I am satisfied with pay here but other than that there is nothing more that would keep me here. On the other hand, stress, employee abuse, is gaining momentum.

HW: We love six sigma and all that process improvement stuff. Like in the DMAIC cycle you just need to define the problem, measure the problem, analyze etc etc

Employee: Ok, here we go:

  • - Define: We are immensely overworked, demoralized, and tired.
  • - Measure: Each of us is doing the work of three people or more.
  • - Analyze: These conditions are making people leave in droves with cascading effects.
  • - Improve: How about we start filling open positions again? How about we stop overworking everyone to the bone?

HW: Oh, uh. Not like that. We just want to hear about opportunities to cut costs, improve the bottom line, and keep our wall street overlords happy. Stop the whining, it's not good for our image. Be happy that you still have a job.

Putting demands on people that can't be met does not in anyway help get the work done. Telling someone "we need this now" when that person is already working on other things and is over worked does not help get anything done. Most of the folks on my team have multiple request that "it must be done now" or "this is your number one priority" at the same time. Since I am old and ready to go I tell the person - "what do you want me to not do" or "I already decided not to work your task, I'm working something else". To me it makes no sense other than the person asking can't trust that you are actually working and thinks you will only work if pushed. There is good stress and bad stress. A little stress can be beneficial, but chronic is not. If I was younger I would be looking elsewhere. I have had stressful jobs and I have had not stressful jobs and I did the same amount of work in both. I actually work better at home, nights, weekends with no one bugging me. But it is never enough - Honeywell way.

Cool story, bro. The first 15 articles that come up when I google if stress is good for the body all say that stress improves the mind and body. Again, it's about how YOU handle stress. Quit making excuses about how your life is so horrible because of someone else, and actually do something about it. Follow the science. Stress is good. I'm so tired of all the whining and complaining about how unfair your life is. I've worked my a-s off, been in some of the most stressful environments imaginable, and am better for it.

@1hwz, spare us the arrogant bluster. My director and I had an HPD goal for something that was needed to make the entire SBG more successful. We were ready and waiting to jump on it; the arrangements were in place. Even with the paperwork signed all the way to the top, they wouldn't cut the check for an amount close to what I make in a week, which was required to get the ball rolling. Petty cash. They knew and they didn't do.

The human body uses stress to strengthen itself. If you aren't handling stress correctly, then that is completely on you, and you alone. Supervisors need truth, instead of excuses, in order to give you the tools required for you to be successful. If you don't know the difference, then you are a failure.

Not worth it. Many have too high of a workload, can not get it all done, but are endlessly pushed. And really no help from a manager and mostly no positive feedback - at standard or below reviews. This causes stress. We have striped the workforce too thin. I think there are better companies to work for with less stress, proper number of employees and w/o the constant pushing. I also think there are a lot of companies just like Hon. The $$ to me is not worth the stress. You need work / life balance. If I was not 60 I would have my resume out there and would be applying for other jobs to try to find a better fit. You can always work as much and as hard as you want at any company, but no need for the pressure.

If you are stressed then your priorities are screwed up.
You will be stressed anywhere you go.
Honeywell certainly tries hard to trigger the fears and doubts and inadequacy that drives stress. You can learn to ignore it.
You won't be a VP with a zen life outlook but you can be a happy engineer.
