SE bargained craft wage scale 32 vs mgmt 1b

I’m considering going from craft to management.

Job security risk aside , what may be other cons to consider ? How do management benefits compare to crafts ? I have 26 years with the company. I know that becomes meaningless once management.

If you like to be paid for your work, stay craft. If you like dealing with BS, and BS people, go management.

It all depends, you’ll get a min 10% bump to your current pay and eligible for a 9% bonus during the year broken into 4 quarters plus eligible for a performance bonus. So if everything falls into place you’ll have a bump of 20%. If you don’t work a lot of OT this could be a plus. Once level 1 you can always lateral or promote to 2 level. Depends if you want to do the same’ol same’ol for the next 10 years.

Hey all , original op here. Thank you all for the honest replies. Much appreciate it. I’m leaning towards staying craft even though my body is beaten up. The only management titles I was targeting were the ones where I don’t manage people and non-exempt aka still eligible for OT. At the end of the day I just don’t trust this company enough to go for it. I see what they are doing to current management and I don’t like it. Thanks again for your thoughts every one !

Do craft titles still get the medical subsidy or is that going away next contract?

3qit+1d7OTp11 His pension was bargained for. He keeps it. If he switches he starts all over again with a management pension (at the bottom). I was offered management at 28yrs but there was no upside. It all depends on age and how long you want to work and what type of boss you have (they will change). I left after 38yrs 11 yrs ago and would still be working if I would have switched. If your young it may not be a bad thing but older watch out. A management surplus and your toast.

My ex-manager was out of our crew…paid 2W PLUS what we paid for healthcare. Constantly whined about how more WE made then him. His phone EVEN at home NEVER stopped ringing. You have to be a manager 5 years before management pension kicks in ….hope you make it. AND there taking healthcare benefits from managers IF they don’t retire by the end of the year?????? For managers????? No OT ….LOL at least no PAID OT 😂😂😂😜😜 YEAH makes sense go for it!! 😂😂😂

As long as you like working until about 68+ ,making less money, having no job security, paying more for benefits I say go for it. 4 more years and out the door forget it.

I went management early in my career. Overall, I think it was a good move, but as they say, hindsight is 20/20. At the end, I could have been raking in a ton more money. The only downside would have been the OT hours needed to hit the six digit numbers some of the techs were getting. There was OT (unpaid) as a manager of course, but not close to what some of those guys racked up. BTW, I never made it to 6 digits! Close, but no cigar!

The biggest con is the "negative percent" bonus structure.......

Look carefully at the wage scale quoted and you will see it is referred to as -11% or -8% .

The meaning of that is whatever salary you agree to, the negative bonus percentage is expected to be made up with your bonuses. example:
Say you agree on a salary of 100K and the bonus for that job is -11%.
You will actually be making 89K and the other 11% might be given as bonuses, or might not.

Good luck to you but just realize for quite a few years you will definitely be bringing home less income.
