Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

A proposal for a new approach to layoffs

I think WF should consider having employees compete to keep their jobs.

Let's say there are 2 jobs of a particular title that need to be eliminated, and 4 people currently occupying that title in a given area.

Those 4 people would engage in a tournament style showdown of both wits and might until 2 of them have been eliminated.

For example, the 'wits' would be a Jeopardy game based on the contents of the employee handbook, and the 'might' would be one of those balance walks over a rapidly rotating slippery log above a moat.

The 2 losers will be laid off unceremoniously (zoom call in front of the entire org, etc), while the 2 victors will be celebrated as the fierce, cunning warriors that they are. Not only will they keep their jobs for at least 3 more months, they'll get a free half day of PTO and a drawstring backpack.

Thoughts?

Discuss.

This is already being done. Last year my team was cut completely, then 8 new positions (half the original size), with basically the same job description were added rolling up to the same 2nd level manager. We all had to apply and interview for those jobs. All of the older people didn't make it to the finals except 1. While I am very good at my job, I'm a terrible interviewer. I suspect the fact that I was one of the lowest paid in my job class might have helped me as well, despite the years of 5's or exceeds performance.

I also get non stop pings to interview! Every job pays more and sounds better than previous on the ping; sounds like these companies up'd their games in tech to win this race

all of them are looking for cloud, cloud architectures and no more manual workforce; if anyone still doing manual tasks, you better go take some classes in current times

Mr Wink. Wink. , You send these in your emails at work too!

maybe keep them out of the public forum

They do that now. It’s called interviewing for your job. I had to do it a few years ago.

Luckily for me, a copy of the question list was accidentally left on my desk. I have no idea who put it there.

Wink wink.

There are people here who would volunteer for a layoff if they were offered a severance package.

Lot of people with big 401k's are sitting on the fence. Burned out, but ready and able to retire, and just collecting a paycheck. A little nudge is all that it would take.

I should know. I'm one of them.

I challenge Schart to a Winner-Take-All tournament. Yeah, I'm just a public university grad, but pretty sure he would tap out!

If you think about it, forced ranking is nearly exactly that.

While I like this idea, I would want to be the loser, but I am vastly more knowledgeable about the handbook than my coworkers are, so I'd be screwed.

well there has to be a fair panel, not like friends of the lazy employees; then a 1 million dollar prize for the winner of the entire round

Well, real world inflation is through the roof, so I'd suggest that EVERYONE is getting a pay cut this year.

OP’s next suggestion…. Start a bidding war. How much of a pay cut are you willing to take and keep your job? Bid early and often!

IT had to re-interview for our jobs a few years ago.

It's always been a competition, OP.

Maybe to do good work, or be the boss's pet, or have a job that no one else can do, or be so good that they won't outsource you, but you are always competing for your job.

It's interesting, OP, that you don't think it's already a competition. It is.

“Might” is discriminatory and runs afoul of the ADA. When do the hard questions start?

All they have to do is offer the severance packages to people that wouldn't mind leaving, but they won't do that. They just want people to quit so they don't have to pay severance or their 401k match (that they want to sc--w you out of) since they are a bunch of unethical "executives" (thieves) running this S-show.
