Location-Based Pay

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/location-based-pay-is-the-newest-conflict-between-workers-and-employers-as-remote-googlers-face-a-25-salary-cut/ar-AANfewB?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531

Interesting article about companies who are considering docking the pay of remote workers due to their supposed lower costs of living. If Wells does abandon the hub strategy, wouldn't be surprised for them to start considering this as another avenue of expense reduction after they hit their target headcount.

Yes, it's true...they actually started a few years ago when they changed me from a Field level 2 to a 3 which pretty much caps your pay unless you get promoted or move positions.

@1mbd+1ck7jMOU To add to that - companies are stuck in “old ways” of having offices, locating them near competitors that drives up salaries (supply/demand) but, when a “new way” comes along, remote work from within a tax constrained “anywhere”, they will only adopt to the point that benefits them.

For the company lower real estate and infrastructure costs so what do they do? Demand further cost reductions in the form of salary from employees. Bottom line, companies serve shareholders, not their workers.

People are missing the point. What is the company paying for? Is it the skill of the person or the bills of the person?

If my skill is worth X amount of money and the job allows a flexible location, what I pay to live there has nothing to do with the SKILL and therefore VALUE I bring the company.

The sooner people stop falling for the horse hockey cultural aspects of these situations and start focusing in the FACTS of them it will be obvious - every company sees all but their own elite (c-suite) as a commodity they can exploit to their advantage. They’re just coming up with new ways to do it.

But not like they are going to raise your pay if you move from a dumpy area to a house in a higher income area.

That is the standard for big companies actually. They figured since you are living in a cheaper area, they don't have to compete as hard with other potential employers in the area.

If they are doing this to you, this is a violation of your rights, keep all the data. I dont think Elizabeth Warren will appreciate it

I figured out they are giving tests, to see who qualifies for their pay scale and roles. It is determining if you can stay or stay at your level or current pay scale.

The manager assessments wont matter.

Sort of like the movie where they gave iq tests to kids at a certain age and the ones that did not make a certain level, they did not qualify for that society.

Study your area as hard as you can, get as many certs as you can and degrees. Train 7 days a week - 10 hours a day if you can

What we get paid I never thought there was anything but differential

Does that mean instead of being paid for region 001 (where it looks like I live) I'll be compensated for actually living in a region 000?

So these a-holes moved knowing the cost of living was significantly lower and still expect google/whoever to keep paying them what they would need in that hellhole of California? At what point will people stop crying victim when they know damn well they are bucking the system?
