I have some personal medical issues that I need to take care of and I let my manager know that I’ll be taking a few days of for a medical procedure. Truth be told, our club has been running a little low on staff in the past couple of months, but I thought a few days for a good-enough reason shouldn't be a problem.
To my surprise, he told me that even though I have the right for time off,but if it was up to him he wouldn’t allow it. He also said that he thinks that it can wait and that my condition was not life.

Call Sedgwick and initiate a leave of absence for medical reasons. Get all paperwork turned into them on time and it should be approved. Your Manager is and a-s.
He said it in desperation and pretty much confided his personal thoughts to you. You can easily tell him you disagree with him and file for medical leave. He cannot disallow the medical leave. Just let it go and take your medical leave.
If it is medical related then submit the leave request to Sedgwick and the needed medical documentation and the manager has no say in the process. He/she can deny personal leaves but not medical.
Open Door The Manager, somebody said? Let me tell you what happened to an associate who opened door his team lead. They fired his a-s. There no protection for anyone who work for Sam's. Open Door is a joke and Ethics? Don't even get me started. It is a joke a mean cruel joke.
I would open door that manager to the GM in a heartbeat!
HR??? What HR?? You must be from Walmart. HR doesn't exist at Sam's unless you mean Ethics. Either way, if you will need more than 3 days, take a Medical LOA. Whether it is life threatening or just a procedure for physical comfort or preventative. Take care of your self and to he-l with anyone who tries to guilt trip you. They can not prevent you from taking an LOA. They can only deny PTO and UPT. That is all. It isnt yours or any other associates fault this company is forever short staffed. Part of why it is short staffed is because of this exact kind of culture. No one cares about associates. They will drive you to the ground if you don't take care of yourself. mentally and physically. Go through Sedgwick. You tried to be considerate and give a heads up, if they want to be nasty and try to say your needs and comfort aren't a necessity, then to heck with them. Don't let anyone there make you feel bad. Because those managers get and use all their vacation every year which is WEEKS plus whatever other time they get. No thought to the club when they do it. Associates start out with 1 week that they have to accumulate thru the year same with PPTO. God forbid you get sick or in an accident etc. Cause you're screwed or have to take LOA.
Have you been working there full-time for more than a year? If so, and it's a procedure that is medically necessary, ASAP, then make it an FMLA request if he won't allow it with PTO. Unpaid leave, but you get the time to have the work done. Even if it's necessary, they don't 'have' to let you use PTO for it. (Though you could possibly make their life interesting if they've done this for others and deny you for some protected reason.)
Unfortunately if the procedure you're talking about is elective and not medically necessary "right now" then your manager may actually have a point.
I'm not saying that makes it right, especially if you're trying to work it out with him a week or more in advance, but yeah, he 'could' deny it, I suppose. Might be worth running it by someone in HR about, to see what they think.
After 10 plus years at the company I have come to the conclusion that management does not care about the associates. Don't get me wrong, I am sure there are some great managers. Our G.M. does not care about us. He is never around and when he is he hides in his office or the receiving office. It doesn't pay to open door them either because they retaliate. Good Luck.
