Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What's your reason?

People who don't have marketable skills staying at AT&T I can understand, but if you are among those who do have them, what's your excuse? Fear? Apathy? Something else? With so many available jobs right now I can't wrap my head around people who have plenty of options deciding to stay here.

These 'why do you stay?' posts are always made by newbies that try to convince people to leave so they will have less people that know more, do more, understand more and are more valuable than they are to compete with.

We understand, of course a newbie cannot compete with an experienced professional.

I guess the answer to the 'why stay?' question is: We put in the time and work to learn the job, it now comes easy and second nature to us, we're good at it and like being good at it....

Cause it’s nice to work up a good sweat in the morning if’n you over did the corn squeezins the night before. Good pay also. And usually tell my manager where he can go when he calls.
Most managers are wimps and are afraid of field work. Second levels usually get rid of them soon anyways. Good riddance.

All of the positive reasons already mentioned as well as the scale of the business. I’ve had the opportunity to relocate three times in the past 15 years, travel extensively, work remotely as well as WFH. There are many opportunities within a business the size of ATT. But the business has changed for many who came into the ‘telephone company’ environment; which explains why some employees have a different perception.

Tons of reasons, many of them cited below. Salary/vacation/pension/etc

The one that hasn't been mentioned, is sure scale of this company.
I work in IT, but doesn't matter, be it purchasing/AR/HR/AP/Legal. This company is so massive, you will see things here that one might never see elsewhere.
In IT, without dropping what I support, the scale is so large, we routinely run across bugs in the software in our deployment, have to go back to the vendor, extended troubleshooting
Work at a small company, say 500 employees, you will never see the issues

So, for me, it's the scale and the challenges that it presents that keeps me here, although I'm out by EOY

they are afraid of actually having to do work that tests their skill they say they have instead of being a spreadsheet pro.

People stay because they have it pretty good. As long as you can ignore the BS, work and get paid.

We could all use better executives than Stankey, Satone and the like. The level of toxicity and silliness is so over the top, you have to wonder who came up with the stuff.

My org leadership is fantastic, my team is great, my coworkers are some of the best, wfh, good salary and time off, respect, etc.
If you don’t have that, maybe it’s time to figure out why.

If you asked that question to an AVP or higher and they gave you an honest answer, it would be "Because I'm getting paid WAY more than I'm worth."

I enjoy my work and I’m actually well paid….I also work from home. I live in an awesome part of the country with moderate weather year round and can sit outside on my patio working most of the year. I have excellent work/life balance. Why would I leave?

Yep! I completely agree….Salary, working from home (for the past 10 years), vacation, less travel these days…..good working relationship with team…..I’ve no complaints…..other than those conjured up by people who seem to think the grass is greener…..

Salary, vacation time, work from home.

People talk about all of the jobs out there...I am active on LinkedIn and took a few interviews over the last couple years. And I agree, depending on your skill set there are plenty of jobs. But if you're 50+ years old and making $1XX,X-X salary plus bonus after 20 something years here...from what I have seen those other jobs aren't starting you at that. One guy audibly gasped on a Zoom interview when I told him what I'd be looking to start at. So, here I sit. My Boss is happy with the job I do. I'm content.

The example of maintaining your job at ATT and comparing it to ‘spousal abuse’ is unconscionable. If you knew any thing about spousal abuse, you would never make such an inappropriate comment. Shameful.

$40+ an hour.
50 hrs a week or more and actually work maybe 10. Maybe.
240 hrs of vaca.
Big pension.
401K
Going on 42 yrs. Almost 60.
Why would I leave?
They have zero clue how slow the outside techs are.
Perfect.

I am staying until medicare eligible since I was never eligible for the healthcare subsidy . . . the pay is ok, not worried about the turmoil either as I ignore the complaints of people here

‘People who don’t have marketable skills stay at ATT’….. Hmmm…..not everyone who works at ATT is a bargained for employee, ie., installation/repair; retail store employee or customer service/call center personnel or other myriad positions which did not require advanced education, or ‘skill set’ upon hiring. Additionally, in spite of your personal beef or beliefs about ATT, there are thousands of employees who are paid competitive salaries, have gained considerable advanced knowledge since joining the company and advance through the company quite successfully. I’m guessing you don’t know this fact which explains your insulting post.

All the current jobs available are in retail, hospitality and construction. Hardly transferable skillset from what is required at AT&T.
What is the point of this post

People stay for a bunch of different reasons:

  • They're lazy
  • They actually like T
  • They are afraid of change
  • They think that the worst is over now and there won't be any more mass surpluses
  • They don't think they can get a better job anywhere else
  • They don't care
  • They believe the demon they know is better than the one they don't

All of those are valid, even if they're all born from the same parents of delusion and inertia. Too bad, because Stink made it clear that nobody should consider T their final employment destination, and all of the things about T that made it so desirable in the past (benefits, pay, career security) are long gone.

Ultimately it won't matter for many because T will force them to make the jump to a new job whether they want to or not.

It is kind of like spouse abuse.

Here it is Stink abuse. The BoD has an opportunity to get rid of the Megalomanic as his job and ATT, Inc is no longer necessary once TW spins off. Employee moral would improve 1000% upon his departure. So to maximize employee despair, the BoD keeps him around so as many employees as possible leave for free.

And then there are employee that just want to try to run them out of $ just applying their S T U P I D rules just like the Stink does.
