It appears that top management made some really bad business decisions in the past . So now they are forced to cut the long lunches and golf at the country club to talk about cost saving measures to save the company . However , it looks like laying off employees and cutting their job benefits is an act of desperation ........ to save their job and to make sure their benefits like HC , internet , phone , country club memberships and company car will be there when they retire .

NOT NECESSARILY TRUE! In my organization, there are far more employees than there is work to go around. Since they claim to be saving vast amounts of money by keeping the work in-house as opposed to outsourcing, they’re not concerned about having employees sitting around doing nothing. T sees it as a win because they’re saving money even though the work isn’t there. They don’t even look in our direction because we’re making money for the company is how they see it...the bottom line!
From my experience "Layoffs are adjustments based on amount of work to be done. Doesn't make sense to have so many workers if there isn't enough work." is not true in all cases. Where I am they have been replacing employees with contractors (many outside the USA) for quite some time.
If you really are a retiree, you got paid and then some. You are whining for the sake of whining. Layoffs are adjustments based on amount of work to be done. Doesn't make sense to have so many workers if there isn't enough work.
