They have already proved the shops are not necessary . they can swap engines and traction motors at an outsource location. Soon all maintenance will be outsourced. Company said they need the warranty others give. In other words we are not reliable . so be ready to close .
Unusual that it happened today, email said July 12th. It also said Conway to have furloughs on the 12th, car and locomotive both. From what I was told, they are sick of the arrogance on the car side with the wheeling and dealing. Car management in Conway is very much on the hot seat for turning a blind eye to this. Locomotive to take a minimal hit, 8-10 total. Car side to get ugly, some to get pulled out of service. Videos of 2nd and 3rd shift inspectors leaving 30 minutes after their shift starts.

This week, next week, next month? Who cares? We all know it’s coming and we got better jobs lined up. Most of us would have quit already except for the hassle of switching health insurance plans to a new employer.

Pretty sure there is only about 410 employees left there. Was over 1,000 a few years ago.
I did that too. The Juniata Machinist put me in backwards however.

Lucky if there is 500 left, supposedly another layoff this week. The mechanical department is in a sad state. Can't speak for the rest of NS.
Not sure now. But I believe at 1 time they had around 1000.
