Retiring on 10/01/21 - how much vacation do I not get paid out on?

Hello -

I am retiring on 10/1. I know you 'earn' your vacation as the year progresses. Any idea of how much vacation I need to not take? If I take it all - would they really dock my last payroll check?

You'll get paid out for any vacation you have in your balance.

How is this a complicated question?

There is a guide that shows how many days earned. One important note, the earned days off for oct become available on 10/1. So on 10/1 you get credit for 10 months of work not 9 from a vacation days perspective.
If you use all your vacation for the year before you leave, you don’t pay it back. BUT, you cannot take more vacation than you have earned after announcing your retirement.

If you are a management employee, there is an easy chart for reference in the "Paid Time Off for US Management" document from OneStop.

remember 10/01/2021 is 9 months 1 day of work not 10 months of work.

You would need to live in a state that requires AT&T to pay out unused vacation. If your are in one of those states, all unused vacation just goes away.

Schedule and take all of your 2021 vacation before then , that way there is no question.

If you're "Bargained for", In District 6 if you retire you get all your unused vacation paid to you on your last paycheck.

If you're "management", I don't know.

To get the maximum payout you would not want to take any vacation. The math works like this (assuming 28 days of vacation). Rounded:

23 days earned (28 x 10/12)
0 less vacation days taken (assume none)
23 days paid out

any vacation days you take will be subtracted from the 23. I doubt they would ding you if you took all 28 days but not overly sure about that.

Take your vacation time and divide by 12. that is how much you earn a month.

Example 28 days a year / 12 months = 2.33 days a month. So by 10/01/2021 you should have accrued ~ 20.97 days, which is 9 full months.

Based on this you should not take 7 of your 28 days. Yours numbers may vary.

You will need to multiply your total number of days by 2/12 or .167. You have not earned this PTO and will not be compensated for it.
