Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Laid off shortly after they started working here?

Around the same time I got hired by this company I started following this board because in a company where I previously worked I got laid off during mass layoffs shortly after I got the job.
Regardless of the general atmosphere here and all the things that aren’t going well in this company, I wouldn’t like it to happen to me again until I expand my skillset enough to go somewhere else.
Did it ever happen here that ATT laid off the people they just hired?

Yep, sounds like things are still the same at T. Douchenozzle LOL. To anyone given an "offer" to leave take it. Don't look back. Its a miserable culture that will consume you. Save yourself.

@1wyo is right -- there are ALWAYS layoffs, and EVERYBODY other than the c-suite is vulnerable.

I got chopped last year. After about 4 months I found a new job, and the difference is simply indescribable. I never realized how much agita I carried during my 7 years with T from worrying about whether I was on the list each quarter. It didn't matter if I did a good job, worked weekends when needed, got outstanding reviews, completed their silly '2020' training, earned two nanodegrees, or got the Service Excellence Award (i did all of that and more). Each and every day at T brought this heaviness and mental erosion because I and all my colleagues knew that none of that mattered and our positions were at the mercy of luck or the whims of some petty L3 director.

All that's gone now. The difference in my attitude and my mental state is remarkable. It really is a wonder just how engaged and active at work I can be without the threat of getting canned, or the frustration of seeing top execs make mistake after mistake and make the employees pay for it. I'm happier, I lost 25lbs, and I actually like getting to work every day.

OP, don't take the job here. Or, if you do, take it and leave as soon as possible. T is a horrible, dysfunctional, toxic place filled with lying and incompetent managers and co-workers too stressed about their future to actually do anything. Morale is in the toilet, and the future looks grim as long as that douchenozzle Stink is in charge.

Stay away.

OP asked if T has ever laid off anyone only recently hired.

Yes. All the time. They lay off new hires, people who've been with the company for 20+ years, people with very specialized skills, people with deep understanding of systems and processes, people who slack off, people who regularly work late, people who ignore all of the stoopid T training and people who follow instructions to the letter. They fire the young, the old, men and women. They fire white people, black people, yellow people, and brown people. They fire xians, jews, muslims, hindus, buddhists, atheists, zoroastrians. They fire those in cities and in rural areas. They fire techs, writers, programmers, data analyists, engineers, sales people, and accountants.

In fact, the only people who never have to worry about being laid off are the top levels of senior executives. Which is odd, because it's the incompetence and mismanagement of top level senior executives that brought on the debt, low revenue, poor stock performance, and falling quality.

It's common to lay off new hires because doing so allows Directors to protect their "core group". This protects their fealty relationships and power base.

Of course, no Director will admit to this. And neither will they be willing to execute an employment contract guaranteeing any fixed term.

Draw your own conclusions.

I don't see how anyone could dispute the fact that att is very honest about the fact that layoffs are common here. In many areas of att, you are vulnerable if you don't have company time seniority. area directors who oversee those classified as management sometimes use seniority but probably won't admit it. I would advise yout to look for another job to gain skills and experience in the meantime. Good luck to you.

They lay off the people that are not needed. Doesn't make sense to pay for workers it does not need.
