Tmobile figured out how to build and run a low cost network with only 50k employees. Customers flock to them for the low prices and decent customer service.
How is ATT supposed to compete with this? Is there any path forward that doesn't include layoffs? Maybe quantum will save us.
Communication carriers have been notorious for frequent layoffs for many years. Some manage to make it a lucrative life career but there are many discarded along the way. I think it is best to find another industry if possible. Another thing is stay away from giant corporations. Midsized companies often pay well but don't rely on layoffs as much to make their numbers.

The people I know who left T and work for TMob don't really work for TM, they work for contracting companies or are contractors themselves.
So, the answer as to how it's done with fewer employees is "contractors"...
I changed my service to Tmob after getting laid off & you pay for the reliability of service at at&t.
It's weird, data speed wise, Tmob smokes T in my area, but their network management is horrid, sometimes I'm on gsm, sometimes I'm roaming, outright coverage holes in weird places.
I like Tmob better but it's not for everyone.
Maybe be one of the 50k? Make yourself valuable every day?

Looks like T’s net adds were way up and they beat earnings. I’m retired and definitely not a fan of this company....but surprising quarter!!

Everybody seems to be in denial, but its slowly eating into T's revenue. You see the big monster getting bigger and bigger but close your eyes and pretend its not there.
Lots of hope for telecom workers. AT&T paying workers, health insurance, pension, 401k. Looking good Stankey.

The real distinction is that t-mobile CEO has full head of hair.

Plenty of hope for telecom workers. We make communication go. There may be some small adjustments to the workforce as needed but AT&T is taking care of the workers. It's a business and we all succeed together.
The difference between T and our competitors is that we had the Three Stooges, Ratty, Stinky and Donovan. TMob execs took Ratty to the cleaners.
And least we forget the BoD that gave us and keeps these f00ls!

Verizon is probably a better comparison. Although a much smaller footprint, and without a media production house (Warner). VZ has 135,300 employees.
As others have said , you can't compare a big legacy provider with lots of divisions to a smaller wireless only retail facing company.
T has lots and lots of divisions, while wireless makes up a substantial portion of its revenue it's not the only portion.
Finally T does have to be nimble when you're the entrenched behemoth (along with Verizon) , you can charge premium rates
TMobile figured out what product they do best and made it better and focused assets on making it better. Very different strategy than AT&T. There is a lot to be said for less complexity.
T–mobile is not a good comparison. They only have a single business model. T has way more than just a wireless network. A million miles of fiber and copper not to mention the TW business. Along with TV products.
