Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Everything has to be complicated?

I don't understand why everything has to be so complicated in this company. I could have done a lot in a much simpler way, but no, ATT always asks that it be done in an absolutely more complicated way. At least that's my impression. My superior thinks that the job is not done well if it is not done in a very complicated way and if I did not work super hard.

You sound like you are (or might be) very new to the company and they might not have impressed upon you that you are working in the most heavily regulated private industry in the world. Half of the steps we perform are required because of some ruling somewhere by some regulatory body. 25 percent of what we do is to not get sued. 15 percent of what we do is to not get fined. 10 percent of what we do is to provide service to our customers. It is the nature of the job in this industry.

I might be more sympathetic if you described a particular scenario.

I have seen att waste so much money re-inventing the wheel it is ridiculous. Look at UAM - it is nothing but rewrite of LDAP but made obscurely because cso thinks something is secure because it isn't used any place else. probably have some patents on it or some bs because they can.

att will never be agile no matter how much noise they make about it. look at their financing. it is so messed up it is beyond fixing. look at how much the vendors charge them. nothing but a waste just because they can.

But what do you expect at a cesspool company like att.

So. Much of the complexity is people over engineering their jobs, so they can appear busy... I've on multiple situations suggested simpler no-brainer approaches but it's always , some bs reason it can't be done because of "compliance" or cost structure or resources or whatever corporate reason de'jour is.

This is why companies this big move as fast as contsiner ships stuck in the suez canal.

Rather than solve the extremely tedious process problems we have. We out source the tasks to a low cost country’s and then develop another form based on excel. For some one to file in. The form then becomes the most important thing as opposed to what we are supposed to be selling or delivering

Many of the highly educated so-called experts pushing out new ways of doing things simply can't see how what they're doing isn't going to work well. You push back and they say it's already launched. Most of the days I spend the morning gutting it out with this stuff and started my real job at lunch time.

Just try launching a new product without and support systems. You have to beg for funding and then still get told no. It’s inly after it launches and things go south that management realizes they have no way to monitor it. Just absolute clueless backward thinking.

It has to be complicated for managers to justify their jobs. Most managers can’t even solve a simple math problem. Most are just hanging on to get a paycheck!

It is complicated only for people who think, are smart and want to do their job straightforward. For the leading mo--ns in Att all is perfectly organized and there is no reason for any delays or complains about 'comllications'.

I hear you brother, I have never worked at a place where between bureaucratic bs and dated technologies , and byzantine territorial policies, all the work is like doing it though the most inefficient way.

This place is the opposite of agile (which makes me chuckle cause of all the "agile " training) .

This is why you just come in do you s–tand go home, trying to innovate or be creative is a lost cause here..collect your money .. and move along..
