Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Sickening

I supervise a large group, hybrid with people in Houston and remote support.

This morning I feel physically sick to my stomach after the ranking session yesterday. We didn’t finish so i had to go again today but my body was: no. Awful feeling. Sickening.

What kind of job is this? What kind of twisted system and culture we have? How can we treat people like this?

I wouldn't feel so responsible. After you work the list, it'll go to the people above you who will pull their favorites up and their dislikes lower. The whole thing pretends to be about merit, but it's really not. There's no forgiveness in the system. Had a bad year? Or even 3 because you were "going through something?" Tough luck. Have a declared disability? GTFO. Believe me, when they put the paperwork in front of you that says, "we think you are worth nothing. Now you can work for 3 months begging for your job, or we can pay you for the 3 months, and you will have the whole time to look for work," you will think, "I put 50+ hours in every week, actually do my job, and make sure everything is handled. If I come in on my "off days" and take special projects, I will never see my family, and what is the point? You could get a lawyer, and refuse to sign, but they might walk you immediately to the door and fire you for "cause." And when a jury hears it, they won't understand the work environment, know who to believe, and you better believe that the paperwork will be flawless from the company that can't get BOLs right half the time...

I can attest that certain skills still have value, and some firms are good transitions, but you have to catch the opportunities at the right moment.

Good luck. Peace out. Life's too short to be that beaten down by a system.

OP you sound like you’d have a problem delivering bad news under any system. That’s the reality of being a supervisor. You don’t just get to hand out participation trophies to everyone. This is true everywhere not just at EM.

Please. Na-i analogy? Big difference here. Every single one of us knows how the system works and that it is a forced distribution. We all agree to participate. You can quit working at EM if you don’t want to be a part of it. Jews couldn’t decline to participate. Show a little respect for the millions who died.

Some of you sound like Na-i leadership. "Hey, someone has to get these people on the trains, just do your job and don't over think it."

Wrong is wrong.

I had a different experience. We are all engineers so we should be able to understand what a forced distribution will result in. Can’t live in fairy tale land and think no one will end up in the bottom buckets. The truth is even those people in the bottom buckets are really contributing. No one wants to end up there but if you aren’t there someone else has to be. Can’t leave them empty. So you can hate the system but realize it is the system here and if you work here you have to live with it. Don’t let it discourage you and work with your supervisor. If you survive the PIP depends a lot on what the organization is trying to achieve for headcount targets.

No sticky notes for anyone this year. Raises? What raises? I question why we are even doing ranking this year.

@OP+1aXJ5OGz Adapt and enjoy the ranking sessions. In ranking sessions, I enjoyed the “dog eat dog” moment. The victim would never have thought that a friend would hammer the final nail to seal his fate!

There is a difference between sickness and disgust.
And levels on down - distaste, concern, annoyance.
I think you are just annoyed.
You wouldn't be where you are at, otherwise.
It will pass.

You felt sick because you care for your people. Dump that away l, focus on progressing your agenda and you will be smiling knowing you have achieved an outstanding ranking for yourself and the Benjamins in your account.

The most sickening part is believing you matter in this system.
Do you know how much matter it takes to produce a single what?

I agree - how did someone so weak get promoted to managing so many people? I&D promotion or just d-mb luck? Straighten your spine and do your job, this is the easiest time for humans to be alive since we began on this planet.

They need to use more colorful heart shaped sticky notes to cheer people up.

You just now thought about this when Exxon has been doing this for years?

At this point it's no secret XOM plans on reducing headcount for the foreseeable future. You chose to stay and gamble that you wont be let go then that's 100% on you 😂
