Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

When should I tell my boss that I'm retiring?

After 37 years, I'm out due to the benefit changes. Fidelity's website says to start the process with them (to take my lump sum and RUN!) 90-180 days in advance. It goes on to say, as soon as I enter my retirement date - to notify my manager. My plans are to depart on November 1st. I'd like to get the ball rolling with Fidelity, so things go smoothly; however I don't really care to give my boss that much notice. I just don't want to be treated like sh!t on my way out. Any thoughts from those who left before me?

the only reason not to give them more than 2 weeks is if you somehow believe a package is coming and want your name put in. As others said, getting Fidelity in order is more important especially to get your health care turned on, otherwise you might be stuck having to pay for Cobra.

Had lump into 401k in about 4 weeks total ... told my manager I was leaving 2 weeks before I left. No need for months of advance notice.

I knew the Vsipp was coming. Retired at 35 with M’s
Congratulations on retirement. Once you put in for retirement you’re set, they can’t mess with you.
You will sleep better and have a smile on your face that no one will ever be able to take away😁

I suspect once you push the button to launch the retirement process, Fidelity will notify ATT HR/Payroll who will in turn notify your chain of command. Not sure why you feel you will be treated badly, however you will probably be twiddling your thumbs as they unload your work responsibilities and hand it off to others who will stay behind. Expect to be board out of your skull once they know and you wait for your exit interview. Use that time to focus on you, plan your retirement or search for a new job.

I'm retired in place and work, um, er, habitat from home.
Should I tell my boss that I'm just here to collect a welfare check?

So, if they were to lay you off, how much notice would they give you? 2 weeks? Ok that’s a good benchmark of how much notice you should give them. Unless you like your team and your boss, in which case 30 days is good and allows for a transition.

I have a good relationship with my boss so I’ve already let him know I’m leaving October 1. I guess it just depends how comfortable you are with your supv.

Just went through this myself. Get the ball rolling with the pension model (official) from Fidelity. It takes a few weeks for them to complete but it is good for 6 months. You can call into fidelity and request the model. It takes about 10 min. Do this. It does take some time to get the model. It can always be changed later.
Double check all your benefits and print out and email the guides to your personal email. Start to review.
As far as timing, all happens with 2 weeks of off role date, so… not much they can do before then

Fidelity does not notify your management.
Go thru the Fidelity process, follow up that it's getting done and if you hate your Boss that much, wait until Thursday PM or Friday AM and tell your boss, THEN SCHEDULE ALL OF YOUR VACATION and don't return and don't take work telephone calls while your on your vacation time!
You will earn a few more days of EWP or Vacation as your on vacation and getting paid to take it, your pension/lump sum will increase because your extending your NCS time and your Boss cannot fill your position because your still in the slot.
A Win for You and whoever is doing your job in the interim will be P.O.'ed that they have to cover for you.

Interesting. I plan on retiring beginning of July. Well actually just leaving, haven’t been with T long enough and not old enough, so the loss of benefits doesn’t impact me. Planned on giving 4 weeks notice. I want to be professional and give my boss (who I adore) enough time to transition my role. Never burn a bridge! Leave with class! But.,.. I did not know about vacation, was wondering about what I can take before my departure. How do I find out what I have accrued vs. what my vacation balance shows? Thanks! Depending on the answer I may change my date. Too many summer vacation plans!!!🤣

I told the boss about a month before I left, and then she firmed it up a couple weeks before so she could process the HR paperwork. Did all the fidelity stuff online, took a couple weeks to roll over the pension, had to wait until the magic over 59 1/2 day to roll the 401. Remember you only get earned vacation and not the years balance, so take as much as possible.

I knew of people in my office who seemed to have retired out of no where. Just get things with fidelity done. Tell management at the last minute so they don’t sc--w you over.

What's the minimum - 90 days? Do that.

Fidelity is real easy to work with, 3 months is plenty of time to get that in order. Anything longer gives T that much more time to F you over on the way out.
