Very common practice in corporate America. The last AT&T CEO, Whitacare had a multi-million dollar consulting contract after he retired, along with other perks like company aircraft use.

A regular employee can’t consult for AT&T after leaving unless they wait 3 months. It’s longer if they take pension or 401k.
