It is more than just PA. I think AT&T is getting out of all of the Bell Atlantic area. I am in NJ and I was notified that my service was being disconnected too - they even included the Verizon phone number in the letter they sent as a head start to going back to Verizon service.
Many employees like me switched from Verizon to AT&T (UNE-P arrangement) years ago when AT&T asked us to help grow the business. They offered an employee discount. So another benefit taken away.
The Legacy AT&T (aka AT&T Communications) which was bought out by SBC (which took AT&T's corp name) was a CLEC operating in the state of Pennsylvania. They were paying Verizon for access/use of the local loop and equipment mostly under the "Unbundled Network Elements (UNE)" model. That they at bowing out should leave customers with an option to just go back to Verizon, since it's their copper/switches anyway.
I think Pennsylvania is part of Bell Atlantic or maybe Nynex, neither of those companies are part of the corporation that bought AT&T. Maybe AT&T telecom is acting as a CLEC in some small part of Pennsylvania but definitely not an ILEC in that state.
I have never heard of AT&T providing local telephone service in Pennsylvania, but apparently there is at least one customer – the guy mentioned in the article.
My guess is that it is a resold ILEC POTS service. Remember the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which was supposed to bring "competition" to local phone service?
Did we actually have any POTS customers there? This is part of the old National / Local company, not an ILEC area.
The cheating, lying, harassment intimidation deception, false customer promises will continue on me GPON fiber plant anyway!
Good. So little revenue coming from it and too much in variable overhead being spent to support it
