Honeywell will move 200 engineering jobs from Redmond to Phoenix

Is this part of the 175 people RIF posted earlier or something new?

Below is the link regarding the latest news.

This reminds me of a few years back when Boeing announced that they are relocating SSG Shared Services Group to Mesa, AZ.

The side lights around the Phoenix runway are like extensions of Darius's arms wanting to embrace the new arrivals from Redmond.

My 2 cents : Spent grade and high school time in north Phoenix. Then lived in the Deep South and in Washington DC area for work. Also explored other places to live including California and the NW. Moved back to Phoenix area 15 years ago. Would trade the bad humidity and weather in all those other places for the summer heat of Phoenix any day. One and a half hour drive to northern AZ provides beautiful forests for camping ( we splurged on a small cabin on the Mogollon Rim and summer days there are wonderful!) and exploring.
House prices in Phoenix have spiked in past year due to influx of people moving here, so consider maybe renting for a while and buying if and when prices recede a bit.

I work at engines, the only site i would ever choose for working at hw . Phoenix must really s—, people wont stop moving here and companies wont stop relocating. If you relocate to DV you will quickly realize there are many other job opportunities with better pay, benefits and culture. I say take the relocation package(if there is one) then immediately start looking for a new job once in the valley.

Here's my words of advice to the Redmond employees:
Lease your house in Washington and rent an apartment in an area of your liking in Phoenix.
Plan on getting Piss'd/PIP'd/RIFd then shipping back to WA with a new company within 3 years. You'll be glad you didn't sell your house there.

Don't do it. Don't trade the green forests of the Northwest for the dry, hot brown of the desert. The average summer forecast is "cloudy with a chance of dirt". Half the summer storms produce blowing dirt and no rain. Plan on getting "valley fever" – a fungal respiratory disease endemic to the desert Southwest. Actually named after the San Juaquin Valley of California. If you are 'cool' with long stretches of highs exceeding 110 then by all means come on down. This is a death defying climate. I'd get out if I could. On the other hand if you like poker Talking Stick c-sino has more poker tables than any c-sino in Las Vegas other than when the WSOP is running. Pot is legal here now so you won't have to forego that.

I've lived in Phx and Washington.
Honestly the Phoenix metro is my preferred location.

Cost of living is much lower.
No snow.
Great foody city.
All major sports.
Hiking and road trips are better than Washington IMHO.

Each of the metros have unique personalities. Most people would live in Tempe or Scottsdale. Central Phoenix is a rapidly gentrifying area with a reto vibe. Just stay East of 7th Ave. Other great areas are Arcadia and Ahwatukee.

Most spend their weekends up north in Sedona, Prescott, or Flagstaff. All three being stunningly beautiful places. Or east in the mountain lakes.

Bad side of Phx would be the public schools in some metros. The fact that its very spread out like a suburb, so it takes time to find the things you like (that is why most tourists only go to Scottsdale). In the daytime, the city can look plain and low class (but at night when the decorative lighting comes out it can look stunning.) Some parts of phx are very poor and to be avoided (i.e. west phx and near the airport). And of course the heat.

The heat can k–l. But most people I hired in from other states had no issues adjusting. After a year, it stopped bothering me.

Finally, I am not currently a Honeywell employee, and I have no good will for them. But I do believe that some parts of the Phx metro, and most of Arizona, are extramly underrated places to live.

I've seen too many examples where someone has been relocated by a corporation only to be dumped in a few years, this time as a stranger in a strange land. Beware.

If you apply and is offered the job, and then turn it down. You wont get severance
Beware

Sad news. Are these the only people affected in Redmond, or is Honeywell planning to close the facility?

My experience relocating was a disaster.
I lost my entire network and it was like starting over again in a new company... without the pay increase and with no honeymoon.
Your mileage may vary but for me... being a refugee from another "failed" location was not what I signed up to do.
Advice – secure your name on the list without actually incurring a relocation commitment.
Commute if you have to like a contractor.

Yeah, here's a sample of an average day in Phoenix:

Another big plus is that the place is leading most cities in the world in high numbers of COVID cases !

If you take the relocation package, you are basically becoming an indentured servant for the next two years. Ask those who relocated from Wichita and Renton to Olathe how many hours they are required to work and the stress load they are under.

I lived in Phoenix and worked for engines for over two decades. Phoenix was a nice place in 1989. Too many people now. Like LA. I now live and work in the Pacific Northwest. I would NOT go back.

It's also evident because the Aero job board, aka Talent Hub, has tons of new postings for Deer Valley. Redmond is a great site, i especially liked working with some of those folks. Truly sorry this has happened. Good luck to all my WA friends, in whatever future you pursue.

ALT knows that when you ask people to relocate you get a decent percentage of workers that won’t go. They try to make due with those that do move and don’t backfill them people that didn’t make the move. If you offer a relocation package it’s also not considered a layoff.

The magic is making people move to a soulless desert metropolis. You lose a lot of heads.

To answer the question, yes. They aren't laying off 175 people. There is an option to relocate.

But it is a dry heat!

And you get to see something called the "Sun".

And rattlesnakes, Tarantulas, scorpions and Oh My...

I like it here but it sure would be a shocking change from those in the northwest.

Moving to Phoenix, AZ from Redmond Washington ?

Wow, that won't be fun, not much rain, not much greenery,
extremely hot summers.

What is the word on percent of people planning to relocate? I bet it is low. Phoenix is a basurero.
