Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

Opportunities for next chapter

I was let go, and with the worst employment situation in decades, there is little chance for me to re-enter this industry, BTW, I'm a geoscientist. I'm thinking to walk away. Any ideas, any opportunities do you think I can switch into?

There are great opportunities for geoscientists in mapping water (hydrogeologist) for geothermal industries and in the hydrogen or lithium sectors. Of course these jobs are in the middle east or europe. The hard rock mining industry also needs geoscientists. China is currently hiring.

Article in Financial Post:

Howard Levitt: Slew of cases answers a key question: Can employers lay off staff with impunity during COVID-19?

This was followed by a decision, one month ago, of the Ontario Superior Court in Yee v Hudson’s Bay Co. which found that: “It seems clear terminations which occurred before the COVID pandemic and its effect on employment opportunities should not attract the same consideration as termination after the beginning of the COVID pandemic and its negative effect on finding comparable employment.”

This was the first judicial recognition of the fact that employees laid off during COVID-19 have a claim for greater severance and answers the question of whether terminated employees will receive a “COVID boost” in arguing for more severance.

Employers with no recourse to claim economic impossibility as a defence and limited ability to pay are increasingly finding themselves confronted with employees that are now legally armed with a right to greater severance. It is a policy conundrum which the courts may be asked to increasingly grapple with.

Depends on your age and what you like. If I were you, I would expand my search to outside of Alberta and perhaps outside of Canada. You can teach English overseas. You can also apply to non for profit organizations. You can do a lot of things to make this world a better place.

the problem with the positions currently advertised that the candidates were already selected, but legally they must follow the "equal opportunity". I have applied to 4 positions where I knew the hiring managers, and they apologized to me and said that they have someone suitable already. I do not blame them, I understand that with these massive layoffs they have friends, lovers, and relatives. The same is with the positions of 800 applicants, its just a waste of effort. I will have EI for the next 60 weeks, it is a good time to rest, learn new skills, upgrade education. We, accountants were paid a lot less than engineers, but we can work anywhere in business, that poor geoscientist can spend next 10 years looking for a job in Calgary or find quickly in USA.

I was laid off from a senior position in 2015 at 50 and now work as a lead in a consulting firm. Here are my two cents FYI. Filling your resume gap through working for free for friends, colleagues, or not-for-profit organizations and adding this work as consulting experience to your resume; Job-hunting is a full-time job so never give up.

Sorry buddy. See it this way- I’m an accountant that has always been paid 40% of your salary no overtime no recognition no decent bonus not working in the field so no LOA and apparently working 12 hours shifts (6 hrs of real work) or free pickup truck and gas to drive kids to hockey games never invited by suppliers to Saltlik lunches or stampede parties and in non oil and gas industries. Let’s say for the past 10 years you had a good run and basically I need to work 22 years to match your earnings Big projects are over so you definitely need to add different skills. That’s the whole problem looming over all Albertans though. Good luck.

You could apply for a Cenovus VP position. I hear there are very little qualifications required aside from nodding and saying yes to every idea to come from Drew.

Of course you must be flexible in the morals department, like be willing to take excessive bonuses while laying employees off. That kind of thing. Good thing is no formal education is required.

Good friend of mine was laid off from a geoscience position in 2017 and now teaches for the CBE after taking an accelerated teaching program. He’s happier than I’ve ever seen him and has no regrets.
