Thread regarding National Oilwell Varco Inc. layoffs

Experiences after NOV?

There is life outside of NOV. Met a lot of great people and did great things while I was there. Facility closure was what made me look for something else and did get a significant bump in pay and fringe benefits outside of NOV working for a more progressive company that has a sense of urgency. If NOV had that sense of urgency years ago during the upturn the company would definitely have made more money.

When I read posts like this, and there are many of them, I get the impression that everyone is doing much better after they've left NOV. I still hesitate, because I don’t believe that everything is so great outside of NOV.

I left after being bullied by very senior people, threatened to sue them and then took a big payout without even consulting a lawyer, now working for myself 1.5 days per week for the same salary. I miss NOV I enjoyed my roll and just couldn’t cope with the boys club and unprofessional conduct that is somehow deemed acceptable, even HR couldn’t give me a reasonable answer as to why such senior people are allowed to get away with a blatant bullying culture.

I posted the original thread. It’s up to you to define what is “great”. If it’s salary you’re looking at then yes, there are employers that pay better than NOV. Work life balance may not be as good as NOV but life is what you make of it.

To the person who hesitates and wonders if posters are not being truthful in saying that life is better when gone from NOV, how about this. It isn't normal to work at a company that has such a constant threat of layoffs. How can anyone go through life that way, and especially if they have a family to support. I didn't take the relocation option because I didn't want to live with the constant threat of a layoff over my head. It was the correct choice. Going on 5 years at my new job and am so busy every day that the thought of being laid off doesn't even enter my mind. And yes, I make more than I did at NOV.

Increased my pay by 60% when I left NOV ! NOV is good and relaxing , not much stressfully and gives you a good feeling and I still enjoyed and feel good about my 5 years there but but but Life is good outside of it too and I thank NOV for what I am today .... but in general NOV pay is lower ...

There is life after NOV. Was forced to move after a facility closure and it definitely was for the better. The pace at my new job is definitely much faster but at the same time if we fixed issues at the same pace at NOV we probably wouldn’t be where we are now and would have made more money during the good days.

Anything is better than NOV. I was there for almost 10 years. NOV is full of dumb a– managers. Great co workers and stuffs but managers were full of BS thats why NOV is broke today. They laid me off and I got 45% pay bump and got more respect, promotion and working with great people. This almost happened to so many ex NOV people. Get out and get paid and get good job and meet good people. You wont regreat.

I took a VERP in 2019 after building a new house the year before. I was very concerned being offered a VERP and not knowing what to do. I look back now and I am glad that I did. I am working in a different industry as an Operations Manager, being rewarded for my responsibilities. There is a better life outside of NOV, but you may need to move to find it.

I left in January for a 120% salary increase (my pay s—ed) and change of industry. I got tired of the old boys club, the diminishing benefits and the ‘we think it’ll get better next year’ promise year after year. Happy with my decision

I lied to myself for years, then they laid me off. Life is truly much better outside of NOV. Yes better pay, and better treatment from management.

Increased my salary over 60% since leaving in 2016, benefits slightly better. I work in healthcare now instead of at some place that poisons the earth. I sleep much better at night, morally. The extra $$$ is also nice and I get to deal with educated clean people instead of smelly ole rednecks. Not trying to knock thing, it is what it is.

The industry is really rocky so there are some hard times out there if people remained in this arena. Most of the people that I come across (former NOV folks) seem much happier and better off. It appears the morale and culture of NOV has completely deteriorated of the the past several years.
