IRS - No Home Office Deductions for 2020

Well, just filed my 2020 tax return, was denied internet, utilities, rent/mortgage expenses, etc! No home office deductions allowed for 2020. So how much did Allstate save on those expenses? How much more was my expenses to maintain an office to do my job? Yes, before you even go there, I am blessed to have been able to keep my job, paycheck during this time. So don't even start with me. BUT my expectation was as in the past, i could claim those expenses and it would even out. Allstate must know this issue exists and as always will ignore it and and not respond to any requests to address it in a Town hall. I have sent questions in every month, they have never addressed one, not even privately. They only address questions that relate to their "Transformation".

To keep my sanity in tact I try and think about what a joy it is to not see the faces of the sociopaths called upper management on a daily basis. That to me is worth its weight in gold.

@bdy+19TitR4m why do you need the higher level internet?
I have basic Comcast plan, no issues with two remove working adults and two students.

I much prefer working from home than dealing with traffic. I can work in sweats and I can sleep later because I’m not spending 2 hours in the car. And I don’t have any issues shutting down for the day. Worth it to me.

Stop crying about working from home. It’s the best thing Allstate ever did for us. The commute & vehicle expense is much more than home internet, water & electricity. Big bonus is it’s always 4:20!! So be happy & stop crying!

Hey Glen and Tom. Pay us! You owe us! I should not have to foot out more personally in utilities to feed your bonuses!

Not the OP but this has also been an issue I had since last April. I had to pay for installation and rental on upgrading my internet with zero consideration from Allstate. The higher level internet is about $50 more a month from what I was paying plus equipment per month. Also my electric did increase about $50 a month and water about $40 a month. Overalk I am footing about $150 more in expenses per month that was not happening working in the office. Also I only work 5 miles from the office so savibgs on car and gas were very small. So you self righteous egomaniacs don't dare tell us our business again! Allstate should do the right thing and compensate us!

Allstate does not control how you file taxes.

You can make deductions on these things within IRS guidelines

Tell us, how much more were your expenses to wfh? Did your mortgage go increase? Did you not have internet prior? Maybe a couple extra toilet flushes at home? A few kilowatts of power?

How much did you actually save? Gasoline, wear and tear on car, reduced dry cleaning, lunch cost savings?

I’m guessing you did okay. And it’s not like the company didn’t have to continue to pay rent on the building you were in.

Stay positive my friend!
