I think those defending HAMR here, are probably the big reason why it’s been such a disaster for years and continues to be. (...) It will work at some point in the future, it will be horribly late though and prevented the company from doing many better things.

STX HAMR will not be a good RW medium as it wear fast. However it may good for archival purposes. Hence limit market. It has not reach the technological level to replace magneto heads.
One thing Seagatent is good at is hamstringing their own HAMR R&D to protect the dividend. There is no extra money available for evaluating ideas. They pigeonhole themselves into one design path and hope it works.
Own all the obsolete memory technology under one brand. Acquire CD/DVD media and player tech. Buy TIVO too.
