Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Create your own job security

I see so many people complaining about the lack of job security at Honeywell but here's the thing: there is no such thing as job security anywhere in the industry anymore - or even outside of if, for that matter. What you can do is create your own job security by being employable. Knowing that you can work anywhere will give you a sense of security you need and you won't be dependant on anybody but yourself. Basically, work on expanding your skills on a daily basis, update your resume, and you're set.

There are many places you can go with less toxic working environment. Where the leadership is not so greedy, borderline criminal, callous and racist. What people is complaining here is the lack of honesty, transparency, indifference.. you know.. basic human decency where people are treated like people and not just numbers.

For some people it is hard to move to take another job, and may not be similar types of jobs in local market. Single or married no kids you are a lot more flexible. Leaving one job for another can be very disruptive. But, I have switched companies 5 times, a couple cross country moves when younger, but each time these were my biggest raises. Having different industries on my resume has seemed to be beneficial in the long run. When younger I wouldn't worry so much about how much your raise will be but rather getting some different experience.

@wof, even the FEELINGS change when you have confidence of knowing that you are competitive in the current job market and could walk out at any time and into a better situation. But we are the only ones who can put ourselves into this position.

I also agree with OP, though I'd call it "employability" rather than "job security". I totally changed industries and careers (to a discipline that didn't even exist when I went to college) based on my personal work on a new skill set (not another degree). The office work scene has transformed from one based on "what you've been taught" (i.e., 4-year degree) to "what you know that is current and relevant", meaning that certificates like PMP, ITIL, Six Sigma, Azure, etc. are more likely to get you your next gig.

These things won't help you much at HON, but people who know they are employable won't want to stay there for long anyway.

@wof: I agree with the OP. I'm in my late 30's, Honeywell is the third company I've worked for, and I'm constantly upgrading my skill sets to improve my employment opportunities and salary for my next job whether it's internal to Honeywell or with a different company. I don't have any of the security issues you referred to in your post.
