AT&T reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where George contemplates on where his life went wrong and realizes that he would've been better off is he had done the complete opposite of everything he's ever done. So what does he start doing......the complete opposite. Gets a new girlfriend, a new front office job with the Yankees after yelling at Steinbrenner, moves out of his parent's house to a new apartment, etc. If AT&T would have done the complete opposite with these failed acquisitions, just think of the possibilities. Sometimes the best move is no move at all.
ATT's culture is one of (1) pathological penny-pinching, (2) a rigid top-heavy hierarchy headed by a grandiose narcissist surrounded by compliant mediocrities, and (3) privileging of employee obedience and conformity over skills, knowledge and experience (i.e, obsession with control). It's a place where Powerpoint skills and an ability to pick up on and fall into line with the latest groupthink b—s— story emanating from the top will get you a helluva lot further than intelligence or talent will. It's hard to imagine anyone who's worked for ATT for any time ever believed TW, whose business was based on creativity and certain degree of risk taking, would survive being absorbed by ATT.
With the tone they have set talent will flee or they will have to vastly overpay to get it. They bought into an industry that is being saturated but they just had to have "content" when sticking to the pipes was the play all along. As always a day late, a dollar short, always skating to where the puck was and never to where it is going.
