Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

Well it’s time

Well Folks,
I guess on Monday we find out which day is d-day for each of us. Probably Tuesday - Thursday about 1,500 people will be let go into one of the worst job markets in decades. We will hear about them treating us with fairness and respect while at the same time taking $30M to pay for their waterfront or ski hill cabins and Hawaii condos. You get to worry about your mortgage and bills and they get to not worry about anything.

Our management’s greed is boundless never forget that. I refer to them as management because they are not leaders, there is no leadership here. They truly do not care about any of us and we all know that is a fact. We are assets or liabilities to them and that is all.

Only people left are over 60 and can't figure out how to check their emails at home.

Here’s a funny thought or two:
Think about the millions Husky is wasting on that white rose project that will eventually be shut down anyways. Then think about the Lima facility which is garbage and will cost millions to get going. Then think about Husky’s history with pipeline spills which will cost millions and the future pipeline spills because well let’s be honest it’s going to keep happening. Then think about our bloated management from the combined companies (i.e. 4 VPs of safety and repeat through the company). Then think about $30M in retention bonuses to management. Then think about the promotions for the management that will come out of the merger. I mean really how many senior managers can a company have??? Then think about Jon crowning himself the new CEO of Cenovus. Then think about the lies about no more layoffs even while this deal was being negotiated.

And that’s all pretty depressing.

But maybe just maybe you will outlast some of the HR & Social Media Watchers who try to shut down free speech on these forums. If nothing else it’s a small comfort. I also take a small comfort in having voted NO to the olympics in Calgary so some rich SVPs kids didn’t get to play at our expense.

I may be petty, but they made me this way. I used to be rah rah CVE but after all the non stop lies and layoffs something snapped.

I was paid about a month per year of service (they rounded up). Plus I was laid off at the beginning of the month and was paid fully until the end. Plus full bonus (based on 1 factor). They pay for a service to help you find another job.
Not sure what a lawyer will get you. These companies are in no way obligated to even pay out this much. Your only damages are for maybe however long it takes you to get a job after EI runs out. Very hard to prove. Worth a call if you feel the need to though.

Can you share details of CVE severance package? Is it one month per year served or more?

I am having a terrible time winning the lottery I try and try but so far no luck. It’s probably Trudeau’s fault somehow but I’m not sure quite how.

Seriously though our mgmt are a bunch of dough heads. With all the work over the weekend trying to figure out who goes and stays does anyone trust them to get it right or do they even care??

Hopefully all Cenovus and Husky people are aware that in Alberta you can visit a Lawyer for 30 minutes free of charge to discuss your layoff package and plan what to do next. Get a Lawyer to write a letter on your behalf to ask for more compensation. Alberta has the highest unemployment rate in the Country, these jobs are never coming back. The world is in the middle of a global pandemic, Husky had a terrible record of laying off people in front of other staff for the last five years. Laying you off and asking you to sign something under duress is unlawful if not totally illegal. They have made no effort to find you another job, they have increased executive compensation while shedding staff and using government wage subsidies to pay themselves. They have a bad record of oil spills and other accidents in the last five years. They are not following the rules about executive compensation that came into effect in 2019 and board of director oversight into compensation of the C-suite.

Yes, I know several people that have “checked out” long ago, just collecting a pay cheque and have no interest in the success of the industry or the company. These are usually the same people that complain about workload when the alternative is months or years searching for another job. They should be pretty easy to identify.

I'm wondering if they budgeted for 2100 tablet replacements?

Should be Tuesday.
Good luck everyone.

Ideally only the strong survive, but we all know that never happens here.

Good luck to everyone.

Let's hope good, hard working people are kept and at least some of the old boys club is purged. And HR.

I wish all of you well and this week is going to be so rough. Just know that there is life after CVE. I took got my golden package after 15 years of service to a manager and a director who were the worst wannabe leaders I’ve ever known. There is peace after the storm. I walked away and found a job with a jewel of a company. Better position. Better money. Better leadership. Hang in there. You company managers (if you can call them that) don’t give a &$@ about you but your family friends and coworkers do. Hang in there. Sending positive thoughts your way.

You got it wrong... they don't own a condo in Hawaii, its a another mansion. They can't believe how far $1MM goes in American real estate

I was laid off from CVE in the mass round in 2018. The package was excellent and I found a new job that I much prefer. I make slightly less money but I’m happier so it’s fine.
Keep up your contacts and treat looking for a new job like it’s your full time job. Keep you head up!
