Thread regarding Anthem Inc. layoffs

Sadly, this is how you survive at Anthem

Positions within the company are all political. To survive you have to know someone important that likes you. Too late for me, they laid all those folks off.

The 2nd way to survive is to stay low and quiet. Working hard to impress means more work into the night.

I can tell who is working late and not. 16 hour days for some folks, others clock out at 5pm. They will keep the 16 hour folks and politically many of the 5pm. It is not what you do, it is who you know.

It is not a healthy work environment. Covid made it worse since now that you work at home you can work all day and all night. And due to local lockdowns, if you take time off, they still expect you to work since you are at home.

You cannot reason with senior management. Just do as you are told and stay quiet. And when covid is over, find a better job. Or find a great boss within the company. If anyone is left.

Yea. The younger but cheaper crowd hiring and promoting is a huge slap in the face. But they don't care. Honestly, no company cares. It’s 100% ageism. We make too much. We know their secrets and bs of their politics. That’s why they hire young and dumb.

Hey out there,
I've been with the company for over 37 years ( I know) Some of you sound like you're in IT, as am I. Work around the clock, weekends nights holidays, its expected of you. I recently applied for jobs internally and what a joke. First the leaders I interviewed were younger than my young adult kids. Introducing themselces to me telling me their back ground, absolutely no prior experience in the industry. So exactly , its who you know. For me as that other poster they are all gone. Secondly, I had so much knowledge I think it scared them. Third, In getting past the first level of interviews which isnt easy, I got by -passed by non American contractors twice in the business area in which I applid , no way I can compete with that.

So as another poster put it I'm laying low. Although the workplace strategy of moving IT to core locations is over, I'll just ride it out.

The company is changing by leaps and bounds. But you should be at least somewhat happy where you work not miserable, try to make the best of it. I can truly say I have been taken care financially working here and have had stable income and insurance ( at a price ! Lordy)
I have had much training and certifications paid by Anthem that I can use outside of Anthem that i normally would have not taken due to cost.
Take advantage of any training you can that Anthem offers, many self pace classes, try to make it a positive.
Were all in the same boat.
Stay well

I have been working at the same job level for 5 years. I have always received very good reviews, I was transfer laterally to a new position which is 2 grades higher than mine. I asked my manager if I will be promoted and he said I will have to prove myself in the position then he will think about. They have hired employees 3 levels above me who I have to train. These people do not have the technical competence based on my observation. If I were coming in new to the company I would not have to prove myself to get a higher level job. I agree that you have to be buddy with management to get promoted.
