Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T Is Sad

https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20201221/10160445930/att-is-sad-because-nobody-wants-to-overpay-directv.shtml (excerpts below)

Under CEO Randall Stephenson, AT&T spent roughly $200 billion on mergers with DirecTV and Time Warner, hoping this would secure its ability to dominate the pay TV space through brute force. But the exact opposite happened. Saddled with so much debt from the deal, AT&T passed on annoying price hikes to its consumers. It also embraced a branding strategy so damn confusing – with so many different product names – it even confused its own employees (see article titled "AT&T's Terrible New TV Branding Confuses Even AT&T" from the good old days of 2019 - https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20190905/07444142926/atts-terrible-new-tv-branding-confuses-even-att.shtml )

When we talk about the U.S. having flimsy and pathetic antitrust scrutiny and a relentless obsession with id–tic, "growth for growth's sake" mergers, AT&T's last five years remains exhibit A. instead of promised innovation, we got rate hikes and layoffs. And the next time AT&T proposes a merger, folks will pretend none of this ever happened.

Without a doubt, the DIRECTV merger was one of the most ill-advised mergers. Without it, AT&T could have doubled its efforts to build out fiber, improved back office systems to improve billing and customer care, and probably could have gotten HBO Max off the ground a year earlier. More fiber installations, more fiber and mobility upgrades to get HBO Max would mean more jobs.

Interesting that I got all those downvotes. I was throwing a bone at the attt haters calling it an as** company, lol. Seriously ATT management like many companies have made too many mistakes that cost decent people jobs. However, despite their terrible decisions, government has cost a lot more jobs than att ever has. I read today that tens of thousands of mainly women opened businesses have closed due to ridiculous orders mostly in left wing states like NY and CA. Hey mr purist, this maybe a straw man and I am beating the c-ap out of it. Lol

"these are the same hypocrites wh scour the tax code or pay experts to get every dollar they are legally allowed to claim. "

Oh look, a neckbeard creating a strawman out of thin air, only to attack it.

I recall AT&T lobbying for those tax cuts. and making promises of new jobs if they get them.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2019/05/att-promised-7000-new-jobs-to-get-tax-break-it-cut-23000-jobs-instead/

AT&T has cut more than 23,000 jobs since receiving a big tax cut at the end of 2017, despite lobbying heavily for the tax cut by claiming that it would create thousands of jobs.

AT&T cut capital spending and kept laying people off after the tax cut. A union analysis of AT&T's publicly available financial statements shows the telecom company eliminated 23,328 jobs since the Tax Cut and Jobs Act passed in late 2017, including nearly 6,000 in the first quarter of 2019.

I kinda chuckle when economic mo–ns call reducing taxes "tax breaks" or "tax giveaways". these are the same hypocrites wh scour the tax code or pay experts to get every dollar they are legally allowed to claim.

Do you all know that att reducing head counts also reduce its deductible expenses which leads to higher taxes?

what is wrong is ATT promised to create jobs when they knew they would be cutting jobs. there is a sub Reddit called "am I the *hole. Someone posts a story and ask strangers to vote on a scale of 1 to 5 if there are *holes. For the last 20+ years under various CEOS, ATT is a 5/5 on that scale.
