Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Honeywell has no idea what lean means

If done right, they would staff at 150% of demand. That extra 50% is to focus on cross training, process improvement, and the unscheduled work that comes in unplanned.

The next year you stay 150% staffed, but you need less people because of the skill and process improvement.

The cycle repeats, and after 5 years or so you get higher output with fewer people than you started with.

I've seen it work. It fails when some id–t thinks they can simply let 10% of the people go after a process mapping session.

Actually, that is the Toyota model.

Also, ask yourself why nothing changes at Honeywell? How long can companies last without training budgets and cross training headcount. The Aerospace industry's worst college reimbursement plan.

You want to see how bad it can get? Google "Safran Back To Square One In Business Aviation". Read the ceo's comment on how they failed to staff and train their young engineers and forgot how to design engines. Honeywell is in the same boat.

The ultimate goal of six sigma and lean is fewer workers. If you do all the projects and have same heads, or suppliers prices are the same, no savings. Hon version is quicker, lay people off, demand lower prices or find cheaper suppliers, then beat people to do more. Lean and Six Sigma are stories for Wall Street. Move manufacturing off shore then just demand remaining workers make it happen.

Ideal but its heresy to Corporate America. No way in this beautiful blue planet that you are allowed to staff more than you need.
Look at this year as an example. The moment the receipts came down, the jobs were out the following week.

You got to be drinking lean, to believe it'll work at the Torrance facility. No control in variation at all...
