Stack ranking - here is what my manager told me

I was told by my manager that stack ranking will be across the entire department, irregardless of job title. So in a group of 650 or so people, in IT, everyone will fall into the same stack. I would have expected it to be by job title, but was told otherwise. Does anyone have information to confirm or disagree with this?

“reconcginied” is my biggest pet peeve, irrespective of cultural and intellectual differences. Even if it were to be an actual word, it would mean reconnaissance.

Yes, things are rolled up because you have to look at a relatively large pool of people to understand whether you are significantly deviating from the curve AND then be able to slice and dice by different dimensions to look for inequities and still have sufficient sample size in those groupings. One example is to look at the curve by "levels" of a job family, or groups of levels... in doing this the check/balance is to see that managers are not rating managers or higher-leveled individual contributors in a more positively skewed way than lower-leveled jobs (I.e. rewarding managers at the expense of the mass of workers).

I am a manager and I saw these reports for my own team, peers' teams, and how they roll up into our boss's overall numbers. Any weird stuff sticks out pretty quickly and gets flagged for review and explanation. This is a new process and it is better than how it used to work when we previously had the five point rating system (before the past couple of years where we were on the binary rating)

@1wxi and for others that are curious I too may disagree with the usage of "irregardless" but it did become a non-standard reconcginied word from Merriam Webster dictionary in Jan 2020.

As redundant as it seems to be, "irregardless" is a word. Google it.

“irregardless" is my biggest pet peeve, irrespective of cultural and intellectual differences. Even if it were to be an actual word, it would mean the exact opposite of its common usage.

And we apparently hire these people.

Stacked ranking does nothing but pit people against one another. It does not promote teamwork because people are out for themselves. Any advantage they have over someone else on the same team will be used to their advantage to gain a better rating than the others.

It also creates people who do nothing more than vei for visibility and create noise for themselves, rather than working in earnest.

It also promotes a** kissers of the first order.

yea so make sure to make your coworkers look bad so even if you normally would be in bottom 10%, if you make them look worse , you will make it! Its in everyone's best interest.

Its all a game, who is the most unethical. GE is bad company too!

Now how are we stack ranking the exec's? I am seeing 0 progress from anyone at the top

There are rollups at every level where they want to put in checks. We were asked to re-review our employees ratings three times by our Snr Manager. This was due to skme level higher up not quite in line with their required bell curve. This was for around 80 employees and we have a wide swath of job titles, and I’m sure it was sent out to the other 7 senior managers.

They can do whatever the f they want.

Some people might even put up with it, like a woman who forgives a cheating husband.

Some women, however, take up the fine art of knife throwing when they find out it was a d!ck move.

They keep putzin around they gonna need double their lawyer staffing to deal with employee litigation.

Sometimes thats needed to be keep $36,000,000a year CEOs on their toes, and hands offa da merchandise.

Its the only way they will learn.

Makes sense when you think about it. Job title shouldn't matter. 20% exceed, 70% meet and 10% should go. Worked fine year ago when I was at GE.
