Mechanical management cuts

2021 is going to be rough on mechanical management. Strick ratios on management to craft coming. Look to return to your craft seniority if you still have any. I'm in management and not sure I'll make it.

Bosses in Cincinnati are all about to get fired. Building trains in an idled yard, pulling tags on bad orders and mixing up numbers to make goals. I've seen it before and it always ends with management rotation.

Where? Where are there enough people to stand around? You must be talking about the few d—beats with seniority that have always stood around while management looked the other way while asking those who would work for more! Nothing new here, just the same ol same ol! This is now and always has been a management problem! If they won’t deal with it then they should be fired, not the workers.

nothing is cut to the bone yet. numbers are set by traffic volume and loco counts. the math is simple. too many locomotives so too many people management and union. this is just getting started. look around people still standing around.

“Mechanical supervisors” on the railroad perform administrative duties that were previously done by clerks. When a craft person has a question about how to actually perform a task, they will ask a more experienced mechanic the specifics. If a craft person asks a “mechanical supervisor” how to do something, they will reference the task in the computer and print it out, or advise the mechanic to reference the procedure. Hands on demonstration from a boss who came up through a craft and can personally show someone how to do something is a thing of the past. There are massive financial benefits to be gained by eliminating these positions, and virtually no lost productivity.

If they want to hit the operating ratio of the other class ones they have to cut middle management the crafts are already cut to the bone they cannot afford to make many more cuts there and still run the operation their creation of go teams and use of rule 24 indicates they know they have cut to deep in certain locations. The company is extremely top heavy the reason they have not made the operating ratio goal now is their refusal to make major cuts in management.

What I've seen is the number of management at my location is the same as it was 5 years ago although the number of craft is half what it was then.
