Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

I just saw this and grrrr

I was watching the town hall again and I believe it was Alex that mentioned that if a manager is no longer needed in their current role they may be given the option to take over another role that would have gone to one of their direct reports. So in effect your manager could choose to take over your job and you would be let go, not them.

Am I making this up or hearing something that was not said? This would be a moral crusher of epic proportions having management with the higher salaries saved by taking over individual contributors roles who generally get paid less and laying off the lower employees.

I really hope I am making this up as I would hope not even our management could be this evil.

And now look what is happening, this is what you get for years of company sponsored socio-path training, opps sorry, that should be "leadership training".

some very short skirt got a manager position in a key role years ago. Sr. Manager got canned, now the vp doesnt look good either. Whatever works... hope for justice! People should be selected by capability to lead from above and not the other way

Husky management is famous for the old boys club. There are so many incompetent managers. They were supposed to target level 8's and higher in there last round of layoffs in October 2019, however all the delinquents are still there. They actually ended up promoting more managers. The company has always struggled with strong leadership. The organization is very divided and works in compartments. Back Stabbing, incompetence and s-xism. If people focused on there roles they would need half the staff (but that takes a leader to establish those for their team and identify priorities and alignment with the overall corporate vision). Consultants picking up the bills for "team building parties" and charging back to AFE's. Be careful who you retain Cenovus. There are a few good leaders - but most have a closet full of skeletons and are in it for themselves and don't know the first thing about leading a team.

And to clarify story below it was mainly just basic bad attitude like giving women the worst jobs or low profile work and things like that. I don’t mean to imply harassment or anything illegal.

We had the most s-xist Group Lead on our team a few years back and the VP knew about it and so did everyone else. Many complaints were made to managers and other group leads, but people were afraid to go to HR because the feeling was they would just tell the VP that you were complaining and then it was a strike against you. Finally one woman had enough and did go to HR and complain. It took a lot though as it was constant layoffs so everyone was afraid. Also he was tight with the VP so she had a lot of guts to make the complaint.

They had these leadership reviews where you talked with your group leads manager but you knew if you said anything negative it would go right to the group lead and they would know who said what, the managers also really didn’t want to hear anything negative. And again if you said anything negative well you were a complainer and a strike against you.

Even as a guy you would see what he was doing and just shake your head, and I am ashamed to say we all just kept our mouths shut. The women on the teams all knew it as well and kept quiet. It was non stop layoffs so no one wanted to rock the boat ever and we all knew HR was not there for us.

End result was the next round of layoffs he was gone but only because finally HR forced the VPs hand.

My point of the story is that there are many who should not be in charge of people but it seems they have always protected their own to the detriment of the company. All the mangers knew what was going on but none of them ever spoke up about it. So it’s no surprise they would keep a manager or group lead and let an employee go.

I assume they have finally realized that most of the managers shouldn't have ever been placed in charge of human beings. The big whoopsie is yah, don't get rid of the hard working knowledge that expects less... especially if the replacement will already resent the situation.
