Back before the start if the smart phone craze I had a cingular corporate manager tell me that profit was 60 cents on the dollar for every customer bill.
Wireless is basicly an unregulated competitive business, Started out as a luxury, and the companies grew up with those 75% margins, and it's hard to shake. Other countries treat it as a regulated utility, so cost is less. They will all take whatever the customer is willing to pay. If every customer would move to the lowest cost prepaid plan things would change.
Much of the expenses are from the Gooberment, who reaches deep into everyone's pockets! This is at all levels - Fed, state and local.
Don't forget the expensive spectrum auctions, hidden unlike the taxes listed. And all the hidden regulation costs.
Please keep in mind this is not limited to the Telecom industry. The oil industry is similar. A gallon of gasoline is similar. Taxes are much, much more than what ExxonMobil profits on a gallon of gas!
So guess who is the real robber barron?
It's because they have to pay Lily for expensive commercials. Ones that people are already complaining about as being obnoxious.

Thanks for the commercial
Then don't pay it! Write a letter and mail it! Smoke signals!
It's amazing technology that costs about as much as the old landline used to cost due to AT&T's monopoly. But we paid it, because you gotta have it!
