Thread regarding CenturyLink layoffs

CenturyLink will continue to downsize for the foreseeable future

CenturyLink like all old phone companies are dying a slow death. Its not necessarily the management fault but technology has made it obsolete. They could of been Google but mistakes made years ago prevented that. Fiber to the prem will be around for awhile but the need for people to work it will decrease. There are a lot of companies doing this. They will continue to downsize for the foreseeable future.

Well said, @1rqf+184Ta8m3.

10 - 20 years time fiber to the prem will be history, just like the filofax, the annual diary and the internal combustion engine. Datacenters will be under the ocean to save the cost of land and cooling and everything will be high speed 8/9/10G wireless.

The newer fiber equipment takes less to maintain. Card swaps are really not worth paying high dollar for, and programming can be done from anywhere.

Wireless is becoming more of an option with much less overhead. My children in their homes only use wireless access points from Verizon and stream multi TV. For a time fiber to residents in the suburbs will still be a viable option but will eventually give way to wireless. Just like cable TV has given way to streaming. My home in windstream territory they dropped cable TV and switched me to streaming. They sent the boxes to me to hook up . No feild tech needed. I dont say this with joy but the company i worked for for 40 years no longer exist

Local cable company techs are right up there with us now. We’ve been taking small raises and having our benefits taken already. Everyone from local truck drivers to Costco are catching us and will eventually pass us. This is just a job anymore. We aren’t elite in our pay and benefits anymore. A contractor who works hard and has a splicing (fiber or copper) can make more than us also. I’ve been around a while and seen these things slowly come to fruition. Not mad, I still enjoy my job and I’m vested in my pension. So if you are one of those that just come here to complain techs are overpaid you’re living in the past.

I agree ....you will need people ....but you can pay them less with bare minimum benefits.Look at your local cable company

Last I heard top level Techs there make well over 40 dollars an hour...

The stupidest thing I have heard.” Fiber to the prem will be around for awhile but the need for people to work it will decrease.” As long as you have ANY infrastructure, you will need people to maintain it.
