AT&T will never be a cool tech company. About the only “tech” that goes on at T is preparing meaningless, useless metrics and big data, to be passed between the 11 layers of management.

What is so cool about Google? Cool is SpaceX, not some goony company filled to the brim with social rejects. Designing, testing and then launching rockets off to space is definitely bragging rights.

Been to way too many AI show and tell sessions, lost count. The problem isn't the technology or science, they are just solutions looking for a problem. Meanwhile, as previous poster had pointed, junk fees are driving customers away. You can make 10 different widget with 10 different process, ultimately, when no one wants to buy the widget, it is completely pointless.
Google had many internal projects that went no where. But, the few that got launched, are massive revenue streams. You can't replicate these results just calling yourself a tech company and send out power point to "change culture".
How? When they outsource and offshore their technical positions?
No. it is obvious by the type of mandator training they care more about having everyone parroting the same lines than to develop technical & software skills like programming languages, and one would only dream about AI, Autonomous Vehicles, Machine Learning, Block-chain, etc.

The company is managed and led by folks who have no clue how their company ( and the technology that makes it possible ) even works. A simple idea ultimately turns into more conference calls than there are stars in the universe. By the time anyone finally makes a decision, it has become outdated.
These are the same folks who dreamed of being this amazing, transformed super-company in 2020. These are the same folks who have decided it's " necessary " to upgrade their central office hardware after ignoring it for the past twenty years. They're all talk and full of bluster until financial reality rears its head and takes a big bite out of their dream for them.
These are the same folks who wrecked the company, put it into world-record level debt then abandoned ship with a nice golden pension for the rest of their life.
Become a tech company like Google you say ?
At the rate AT&T is going, they'll be lucky to even be a company at ALL within a decade.
As someone who works at AT&T as a software engineer, no.
I think Randall was absolutely obsessed with google They were in his head.
T wants to emulate the modern silicon valley culture, with a legacy corporations management culture. .Never going to happen. The company just isn't structured that way.
They certainly make a lot of noise with internal technology divisions , but most are working half-baked ideas, its like every other idea is a machine -learning model on how to reduce churn.. Hey T , hers a tip you don't need AI to tell you if you don't fck over your customers with junk fees and gotcha contracts and offer competitive subscriber rates you will have less churn, I dont need big data to state the obvious.. Management has all the leadership wisdom of a blind mouse in a maze.
