Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Stay in EM or look for an opportunity in another industry?

I have nothing against evolving and adapting to the situation, but I honestly envy a bit everyone who has transferable work skills and finds it easy to keep a job with minimal retraining. I just read an article which says that staying in O&G is harder than ever, which is very discouraging. Changing the industry is also a big challenge - don’t know how easy it is for oil workers to look for work maybe in agriculture or logistics??? Wonder where laid-off EM workers found their next jobs...

In case someone is interested, here is the article: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/oil-and-gas-after-layoff-bounceback-statistics-canada-report-1.5762201
Data from Statistics Canada study were used but I don't think Canada is unique on this issue.

I was in the trading floor at F&L, a lot of trading shops are actually Hiring this year, and made a lot of money. Several people got pip in July took the 3 months pay, had a job offer within a month. I had a few opportunities earlier this year but turned it down before I was offered the pip in July. I took a couple week long vacations, enjoyed my time with the kid, got an offer last month, pretty much same base salary I had at xom, but also with 20% bonus. Just started new job this week.

Spoke to a couple from finance services, quite open about planning their exit. Seems like thier skills are easily transferable. How I wish mine is the case - emre.

Leave now if you're a Chem E or any kind of E. You will have no market value outside of EM because you have bounced around doing random "opportunities" your whole career. Trust me, I should have left 10 years ago and now I'm paying for it.

Go get an MBA or Master in Finance , if you are an engineer or IT. You can restart your career anywhere. Chem Es can apply to med school. Geologists can take a few biology and chemistry courses and go to med/dental school or pharmacy school. If you were smart enough to be hired by XOM, you can get into any med school and most MBA programs. Almost anyone can go to Law school (if you are STEM, you are alot smarter than liberal arts majors)...Plus they want tech background for Intellectual Property issues. Several people I know gutted up. sold the house, got Stanford or Harvard MBAs and are now working at 250k per year in Tech or on wall street, Payout on the MBA is about 4 years counting lost salary. Spouse may not like it. Rice, UT and A&M MBA are only 150k. Invest in yourself

Use your time in EM to build your exit plan. Ideally you want to get the 3 months pay in lieu, and join your new company.

And if you think you are alone at this.. rest assume many EM colleagues I know are already planning for their exit. Hopefully we all get to a better place

Don’t leave until you have another job lined up. Then if you can, engineer a layoff.

as an employee under 3 years of service, should I get out now or wait 9 months until I hit my 401k match vest date?

Get out now unless you are close to retirement

Even with a degree in Petro Engineering - there are alternative industries needing similar training and skills. Not like a cat-cracker is a type-caster.

@ctu I'm still far from retirement and considering a career change.

@ewr hey instead of being a jerk, maybe read the rest of the question before posting (not the OP btw)

Is this a question? Are you serious? I think you need to be made a lowly supervisor at EM.
