Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Do furloughs equal delayed layoffs?

Anyone else worried that furloughs actually equal delayed layoffs? A friend of mine (who doesn't work at Honeywell) was furloughed in April and four months later they called him to tell him that his furlough was made permanent (he was laid off, in other words.) Yet those layoffs never made the news. Neat trick by the company to avoid bed publicity. Could we be looking at something similar happening?

Depends. But a furlough can have its perks. Many companies let you keep your health insurance which makes job hunting a bit less stressful. Also, the furlough time could count count towards severance size later.

But if the furlough us just 1 day a week, don't expect to be laid off later.

Yes, this has happened to many people I know in Honeywell and at other companies.... furlough the low level grunts, tell them not to look for work, hope for the best with a possible return to ‘normal’ if not.... they just lost however long not interviewing. Pretty crafty, eh? ; )

Furloughs, in general even if extended, maintain benefits and other relationships with the business. With H, who knows.

The one day aweek furlough is so they don't have to pay unemployment like they had to during the second quarter. Gotta lover those bean counters that still have a job ....

Furloughs won't stave off layoffs. HON likes to steal money from the employees before letting them go. Furloughs are just the cherry on top of mad dog's c-ap sundae

Furloughs have designated end dates for return to work. If your friend was never given a return to work date at the time that he was told to go home, he wasn't furloughed, he was already laid off.
