Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

It's the way this has all been handled

NSI'd 30+ year employee here. Even before that, morale at Clinton (both CSR and EMRE) was the lowest that I've ever seen. Even though you might assume that the staff who survived the last ranking process breathed a sigh of relief, I doubt their morale got any better after they tool a look around an saw which of their team members had left the company.

As stated in other threads, it's not so much the fact that the company needed to downsize because of budget cuts, it's the way this has all been handled. Executives lying through their teeth, while they give you their fixed grin. The ranking system being revised twice (first new bucket names, then minimum 8% in NSI with no limit on how far up or down people could move) between cycles. Supervisors being empowered (see what I did there?) to put "difficult" employees (i.e. critical thinkers, not "yes" men or women) into the bottom 8% with no questions asked by Management, HR or Law.

@kkw, HR will never have an employee advocate role. They own the staffing and development and PADP processes. The current HR leadership is ruthless and likely came up with the idea to use the new assessment system to mask what is obviously a layoff. This type of mass reduction without a SPOSA severance is a first for ExxonMobil and contrary to what the Chevrons and Shells are doing. ExxonMobil has always used the rank list to identify who would be laid off so nothing has changed in that regard. The only thing that has changed is our senior leadership’s absence of character and honesty. More pain will follow for employees over the next several months. Woods and his whisperers in HR have lost long term credibility with the workforce and that is a shame for this once great company.

Very good post! Why can't they call a spade a spade, instead of telling you you are NSI.

Only thing I disagree with is that it was the merger... I personally have seen in the last 10 years management move into the bully mode and the decision start moving degree folks automagically every 18 to 24 months in supervisory positions. This was not an Exxon method nor was it a Mobil method. This was the result of some entitled bullies methods which has ruined this corporation.

Very well stated. It’s the feeling of the underhandedness that is leaving a bad taste in people mouths. Shouldn’t need a union to have employee advocates. There should be a second branch of HR with different leadership that are employee advocates.

Its rough to lose your job, and probably not fair, but 30+ years career at ExxonMobil, I daresay you've lived a blessed life in the career department.

So very true my friend, same thing happened to me with 24 years service. 5 months ago got a 4% raise that I was not expecting and SLS supervisor praised me for all the good feedback. Then 3 months ago got annual PADP and feedback from knowledgeable others was top notch. And then suddenly in July was told I am in bottom and will need to enter PIP. In 3 weeks I took the 3 month option and quit immediately and found a better job! The way XOM treated me was inhumane, ruthless and cold. I generated many new ideas. And you are right - if you are not a YES-man or YES-woman, if you think independently you are on the chopping board. Talk the BS like silly stuff - NLI QI LPO LPSA and keep repeating the importance of holding on to hand rails while walking up/down the stairs and keep agreeing with insane actions your boss and bosses are doing then you stand the chance of getting promoted. Believe me since the merger in 2000, when Exxon culture destroyed the Mobil culture, I have always felt dealing with mentally ill people in the company. When they chopped me I was hurt and insulted. But I am so happy and relieved now. Felt like surrounded by Nazi secret police or by mentally ill people.
