Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

pockets of low morale

At the McFreshy townhall, he claimed there were just pockets of low morale. Must be a pretty big pocket.

Also put a couple of other exec types on the spot asking if there were morale problems in their orgs. Both danced around the question.

Jeffy is right that there are pockets of low morale but he failed to say they are big pockets. Even if in a group not getting surplused you are impacted by others getting surplused. I was surplused over 2 years ago then hired back at same base, different title. I don't have any emotions about T and see it as a money contract only just like a contractor does. Once you change your mindset you are no longer impacted by morale.

To have any discussion about "morale" you would have to first acknowledge that people care, and that is where you get off track. This ship sailed past that some time ago.

No one cares anymore. From what I have seen in my very large org, and as an employee of 25+ years, people that are still here are simply apathetic. No one cares. They will sit through and take any mandatory training as required, do the bare minimum, and continue to milk this heifer for a s long as they can. Low morale would be an improvement to the condition most employees are in.

They could care less about morale. Just using it as a reason to lay-off more people. The less your employer and co-workers know about you the better.

i've worked at att for between 10 years and 40 years, have seen more people get demoted here than promoted, and for past 2 years especially i've been in an ever-deepening cesspool of low morale all around me in my att group. it was somewhat hard work 10 years ago, but it was fairly rewarding from a morale perspective, and considerably better because there was mainly logic in decision making and not rampant desperation at the top as there now is. the feeling is now one of being mired in quick sand, as they reach out and give you a check every 2 weeks, until you sink fully under.

Not every area of the business is toxic. I worked for an organization for a very long time that shall remain nameless and I couldn’t be happier in my position and as an ATT employee! Then it happened rather suddenly that I was assigned to a organization/team that has such bad management, L1 & L2 that everyone around me hates their supervisors as well as the L2 managers! It’s a completely different culture and very stressful to be in and I do believe upper management is aware, but doesn’t care one iota! I am looking elsewhere because it’s really no longer worth it not to mention T is really hanging by a thread on Wall Street!!

I just quit last week and feel awesome for doing so, tons of work out there if you want it and are willing to grow. I’ve never worked in such a toxic culture as AT&T

Keep your chin up, the CEO will make over $20 million this year, while the Chairman will get a Golden parachute. The C-suite is living large and things for them couldn’t be better!!

From my standpoint-29 years as Craft, my morale took a big upturn when I quit watching town halls, responding to surveys, etc. It goes against my nature not to be a proactive participant, but since I have, I’m much happier. When you finally realize your true value to this company the sun shines brighter. It took me a long time to figure it out.

Morale is tided directly to trust. We learned about layoff's, outsourcing, and rebadging on this board and through the grapevines.

Sure, cuts are tough and no one wants it. Management can't be straight and up front about any of these of decisions, everything is done behind doors like immature pre-teens drama queens. Grow a pair, communicate and earn people's respect. whining about low morale is a non-starter.

Question. I'm from DirecTV and will soon be either sold or laid off whichever comes first.
Did AT&T stink before or after buying everything in sight like us and Warner?
I think it su#ked way back hence the post.

His statement is accurate. There are two pockets. Those below say VP, where morale is low, and those VP and above where it is high due to perks, compensation, no not really having to worry if they are going to be part of a surplus in the next quarter regardless of how they perform. They know if they are underperforming they will just get another group in the next reorg and everything will be good. Because leadership hates admitting they made a mistake promoting someone to VP and above and will do whatever it takes to keep any incompetence from coming to light.

So when you look at it through this lens, which is how JM sees it, then there are pockets of low morale, just really big pockets

Every word out of his mouth was a lie; the town hall was sickening. His spiel in response to the layoff question was insulting. He's got the gall to claim that 43% is just cleaning up some dead wood and skill gaps? And that's on top of lying about his georationalization not being a georationalization?

Hey Jeffy, morale will improve when we don't work for gutless liars. Not holding my breath.

lets see after 20+ years of layoffs 3 or 4 times a year - and he is surprised there are moral problems? he is a genius. what world is leadership on? do they expect people to be happy they survive layoffs 3 or 4 times a year? it is bizarro world. people like security and if they are doing a good job they should not have to worry 3 or 4 times a year if they are still going to get a paycheck. I wonder how these people get to be where they are in the company.

Of course morale is in the dumps! And this is a surprise? What do the execs expect after years of layoffs and a sinking ship? The reason why the Titanic sank was NOT because of low morale ...
Question is: What are they going to do about it?
Fire the disheartened souls that have told you for years that the iceberg is still there, and call them "underperformers" ?
Talk about delusional ..

Culture is created from the bottom up not top down. When you say things like no position is safe and you have endless rounds of layoffs what do you think it does to the culture. People entrench and form alliances instead of exceeding expectations. Skin color and group think are more valued than results. The biggest gift your subordinates can give you is honest feedback. Honesty is not rewarded; it is punished. That's one of the reasons I've quit doing surveys and providing feedback. Not doing it says more than doing it.

McLovin, and his minions are ruining morale everyday. Earlier this year he referred to eliminating job as "spreading the peanut butter". That "peanut butter" is the lives of employees. McLovin is an empty shell with no soul.

No one trusts that it’s anonymous. The higher the score the lower the trust. We are breading yes men at every level. Woman are constantly being told they needs to stop arguing and men our encouraged to question the status qou. No one knows what are strategy is and our leaders are ducking their heads to avoid the firing range. I have never been so disappointed in a company that we hAve poured our energy and passion into - we are cowards.

That's what happens when employees are treated as a #. And this is coming down from the top of the ladder, MCfresh and top management should own it.

If McFresh has the balls, bring back the eNPS survey, we will see how low the morale is everywhere.

Morale don’t pay the bills. There is no extra pay for it.
It’s called “work” and not “fun” for a reason.
That said, anyone who could be employed here and care or have morale is never going to make it without going crazy.
Divorce yourself emotionally from work.

Morale has been low for years because of RS-JS-JD and McF. Nothing will change . Townhalls are depressing and the messaging is negative.
