Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

More significant layoffs coming Q1 2021

While all seems quite going into the winter , it seems the business community is already expecting reductions come Q1 2021 . After the election and during Q4 earnings call we'll have a clear idea how this are going to be broken out.

If that's the case, then T should offer these so called lazy priveliged less productive senior union employees a VTP and then, you would see a lot of them leave the company faster than a California brush fire!

Why does the company allow seniority lazy union employees while laying off the younger more productive to stay on payroll? Some feel they are entitled due to seniority and know HR would rather make it impossible to fire them. Sad culture that permits this.

Anything you read on here is only rumor, speculation, innuendo, call it whatever you want, but it’s mostly personal thoughts. There is nothing concrete about layoffs here because no one knows, not even upper management at this point. I’ve dealt with rumors for over 3 decades and I’m still with T. So, don’t be looking for answers here because it just ain’t so!

I'm hearing there's another Management right-sizing coming this summer/fall 2021. Not sure what type of severance will be offered. Likely six months and gone.

I sense our store may be closing. We have only had one manager since December and no interviews or talk of looking for one. My question is does anyone know if they are closing malls even if they’re still in contract? I’m honestly waiting for a severance, wish they would offer us to leave at this point. Management is going down the tubes and so is business.

It is so slow in my organization that I can’t see how there won’t be layoffs this year if this keeps up. There is very little work and way too many people to do it, period! Would T keep employees on the payroll in hopes that these people just leave on their own out of boredom or start reducing headcount! Reducing headcount is the logical move here, unless business starts to pick up!

I would be surprised to see any severance packages offered this year. Current leadership plans seem more obvious than a zebra in the Kentucky derby. In my opinion, this latest round of benefit reductions clearly aimed at older workers is an attempt to reduce workforce without offering severance. If they want their benefits they have to leave by year end. In addition,, the current wireless subscriber growth plan would be an awesome one if it was 1995. Someone must not have told the the 80 year old consultant they hired that the cell phone market is more mature than the cast of Golden Girls. So this year they have more than doubled subscriber quotas for sellers across the board which will be almost impossible to attain in a market this mature. They would then be able to fire the employees not able to hit those new quotas. This would be another way to justify getting rid of employees without providing severance. The one fly in the ointment is they may not have time to wait as their wireless growth last year was primarily due to a huge need for colleges and K-12 to get wifi access for students. They are already starting to see those lines churn off. Some of that will be staved off by allowing a temporary suspend but that will just delay the inevitable churn. The revenue will still be gone but subscriber growth won't tank right away. It will come down to how quickly impacted older workers leave and how soon they can get rid of the glut of mobility sellers who will inevitably miss their quotas.

Dunno if you noticed, but AT&T has clearly begun to exit the development of new technology. They've handed off software work to AMDOCS, and IBM (who also split off its enterprise technology group to off shore interests). They are downsizing the Xandr unit, exiting the ONAP work. So basically, AT&T is no longer a technology company, with technology financials. Its basically evolving to a holding company that markets movies over cellphones.

Why aren’t any bargained for positions being affected by layoffs and only management jobs? There are so many areas where techs are sitting idle with no work, yet these jobs seem to be immune to layoffs!

I’m sure there are a lot of employees willing to leave, but are holding out for that severance package which I can’t blame anyone for! If they would just ask EVERY employee in EVERY business unit if they would be willing to accept a package, then they could eliminate an awful lot of heartache and resentment! Of course I’m dreaming cuz it’s not the T way of reducing head count, unfortunately!

there is a spreadsheet. you're ranked on it. it's a hunting list, prioritized. algorithms were used in it, to protect att from bias lawsuits. this has absolutely nothing to do with the election, nor with the alignment of the cosmos or your horoscope. get real. it has everything to do with a desperate business making desperate decisions, which they're fully entitled to do, unless they break any discrimination laws as they do it. they have plenty of hr lawyers to ensure they don't do anything blatantly stupid as they fire you. so have a good day, work hard, and keep up the morale, because "together we win". yay! yay! yay! go team!

"Most of jobs internal career site expire around election time frame"

I am looking at the job listings on Taleo right now and they all follow the typical 3 week posting schedule and expire mid to late November. This has nothing to do with the election as far as I can see

I never understood how pulling out of markets is supposed to GROW the business. Limiting yourself to a few big-city markets where everybody and their Momma is competing for the same customer is surely doomed to fail. After all, there are only a fixed number of households in every town, even with new construction.. And now, with many folks fleeing the big cities with overcrowded spaces, and moving to suburban/small town USA, they get there and — we got nothing?
Here we go again, T completely mis-reading/not seeing the market dynamics..

Most of jobs internal career site expire around election time frame, if it doesn’t go well, future build plan’s, if any will be very limited, may even see a pull out of some markets all together. Someone please turn off the lights and pull the heat coils out.

"I'm concerned if Trump loses, he's pull a Sherman and basically burn all economic relief"

That's already the plan - McConnell adjourned the Senate without even looking at a new relief bill and if the gop holds the senate this election, he won't pass any relief so he can hang it around Biden's neck for the next 4 years.

The only way to get actual relief passed is putting democrats in charge of everything the next two years.

A lot depends on what the stock market and general economy do post-Nov 3rd. I'm concerned if Trump loses, he's pull a Sherman and basically burn all economic relief because he'll feel jilted by the American people didn't show him enough fealty he deserves. So the next 3 months are big unknowns.

The vaccine will most certainly be here by Q1 of next year, but the economic repercussions will still be felt and lots of folks in corporate are already making plans for much reduced 2021 balance sheets. Remember poor broke people are less inclined to be subscribers to Telco and Entertainment services.. or at least reduce their expenses to a bare minimal , that does not bode well for T.

Definitely need to make big cuts in stores. Home delivery can accomplish the same task.

I was speaking with someone the "in the know" yesterday. (Yes, its a reliable source and not gossip) First quarter is going to bad for retail. More store closings and sales reps gone. If you are in a store that is not closing, then you are safe. If you are in a store that is closing or transferring to A/R, you will get an opportunity to work from home, move to another store that has an opening or IHX. I have been seeing a lot of commercials in the past several days for Right To You. The commercial clears says order on line and have it delivered the same day and the delivery person will help you set up the new phone transfer all your phone information in the comfort of your own home. Lilly even dropped off a phone to a customer and boasted how it was a FREE service. These days with home delivery from groceries, restaurants, alcohol, etc.. is the thing to do, you will see even a bigger decline in store traffic.

My guess is that significant HC reductions will occur sooner than Q1 2021- before year-end. But just a guess - why would they wait? They already have plan objectives in place.
